Do you think the Coronavirus is going to drop or increase GPU prices ?

My neighbor keeps coming around and giving me toilet roll lol.

I was respectful to others and just picked up a 4 pack as we only had 3 left... then he comes with a 6 pack.

In actually related news this GPU topic... I am glad I opted to pick up my RTX 2060 when I did.

If the situation gets worse tough and people start to lose jobs or go on unpaid leave, those prices will soon start crashing down as the cards start to gather dust on shelves :p

Trying to predict how the market will react to all of this is pretty difficult, but what I would guess at is that we will see one of two things: (1) a price increase, or (2) no movement in price.

(1) Price increase - The price increase would be driven by the reduction in stock as the supply chain slows down - sales will continue for a whilst longer, so you will have more stock being sold relative to the stock being produced (even for a limited period of time) such that it becomes more scarce and thus drives prices up. Simply put, for every 10 cards sold there is less then 10 coming in to replace it.

(2) No price movement - As you have touched upon, demand might slow down as people are losing income and/or are simply being more careful with their spending. Whilst you might think this would mean that NV/AMD might lower price to below 'pre-convid 19' levels, I don't think they will. The reason is that there is no rush to sell the stock - it is physical hardware and thus can sit on the shelf for years without any deterioration physically, but more importantly, NV/AMD (questionably) are not rushing out replacement parts (e.g. 3000 series) to make the current stock 'old hardware'. They are in control of the technology here because it is GPUs and there isn't many players in that market. Now you might think that they have their own bills to pay and thus need the cash to keep coming in, which is true, but their not paying their supply chain if they don't produce anything, so they aren't going to feel the impact of the economic slowdown as much as you might expect. The other small point I would add in support of this position is that, as mentioned many times already, these are GPUs which are somewhat of a luxury item and thus the majority of the people (but not all) that want them and can afford them will likely still be in financial positions to do so (its same logic as to why you didn't see discounted super cars following the 2008 recession).

Price is linked to demand, just look at oil right now. Anyone who is prioritising a GPU purchase must have some very bespoke priorities, and an incredibly secure source of income.

I wouldn't buy a 3080ti if it was released at £700 tomorrow.

It seems many would. Maybe in 2-3 months that may change as money starts drying up.

Also there is a huge difference between graphics cards and super cars, not sure that is a valid comparison. But we will see how it goes.

Unfortunately your savings could well end up being worthless if things get out of hand.

There is no way to be safe/protected if the economy goes tatas-up.
Inflation is going to be utterly utterly insane when this is done. The government is going to have to print Trillions to deal with this short term. but it's going to rapidly make inflation beyond belief. Will make Venezeula look tame. If you have 1000 in the bank it will soon be worth 10 or less in real value.

Yes, you maybe want to get a grip of yourself mate.

100 fold who knows. maybe not. Inflation will be utterly insane though. Ask any economics expert. You can't just expect the gov to print money, pay 30 million people wages and bail out half a million businesses without massive consequences.

So more than 100 fold? Lol :p

You better go spend that cash in your bank asap then. Buy a Titan RTX before your money is worthless :D

Everyone laughed at me a month ago too when I said this was a serious virus and not just "flu" and that we would likely be locked down in the near future. Nothing but abuse I got. Mark my words. This will cause unprecidented inflation.

People believe what they want to believe, the lack of critical thought in this country is shocking. It was obvious that what happned in China was on its way here and that like everywehere else we'd be in serious trouble and in *lockdown at some point.

*BJ's "Well yes, but actually no", lockdown, anyway.

The consequences of printing massive sums of money are also not only "obvious", but historically repeatable.

We've seen this this movie many times before.

It may be quite the opposite with the Chinese wanting to offload shedloads of manufactured goods on a western market that does not have the buying power it once did.

This could cause deflation which is not a good thing either.

Having said that we are all armchair experts but the bottom line is no one knows where things are going to be in 12 months time.

Already seeing memory prices creeping up, was eyeing up a 32 gig kit which has jumped over £70 in the last day or 2.

I think a secondary question is will this coronavirus have effected Sony's, Microsoft's, AMD's and Nvidia's release schedules much?

If yes, by how long?

Lets be optimistic and say this is all over globally by July. Are we looking at 6 months delays to original schedules?

---

There are also strong indicators and predictions we will entire in too a recession. I doubt this will effect just the UK.

That will have an effect too.
