MOT exemption from 30th March

There’ll be some utter death traps on the roads over here in Northern Ireland. We’ve already had 4 month exemptions after most mot centres had to close due to issues with vehicle lifts were discovered across the province.
For anyone who doesn’t know, MOTs are carried out in ‘government’ facilities here rather than approved garages.

Its vague but I think from the wording all are extended 6 months from the date they are due. On the gov website the example is early april moving to early oct.
The cant make half the cars in the UK have the same expiry date it would be impossible to get an MOT. As it is right now most cars will end up in the same 6 month window.

Checked mine, not extended yet (its first MOT due Dec 2020), but the guidance says all new cars (ie not had first MOT) extended 6 months, no comments about dates or anything.

Mine expired 29th March, glad I got everything sorted in time before garages started closing.

Yeah i did see on twitter a lot of people were complaining that their MOT's were expiring over the last 2 weeks of March and were finding it impossible to book it into a garage, either because they were self-quarantining themselves, or that mot garages were fully booked or closed. Would seem to have made more sense to have backdated it to 1st March.

Thankfully the mrs's cars mot expires on 9th April, and i was starting to panic about not being able to get it into a garage for an MOT, so a 6 month extension is very welcome.

Yeah, it's an extra 6 months from the end date from the gov website.

It's not clear whether this applies to 'every' car though? i.e. i only had mine MOT'd end of Jan, does that mean i get an additional 6 months meaning my next MOT wouldn't be due for another 14 months...

It does seem to imply that every car that has a valid MOT as at 1 April will automatically get an extra 6 months, certainly for cars awaiting their first MOT thats what it says

Im really happy about this, dont like my MOT and road tax being close, so now they will be 6 months apart :)

Been this morning and the garage was still operating as normal so got my test done and luckily it was a pass. Panic over for me at least :D

It’s not clear from the site where the cut off is. If it’s due in October, will you still get an extra 6 months?

I’ve literally just had mine done which was expiring on 29th March, would love mine to last 18 months but I can’t see that happening.

Mine is due 20th April along with a service, but given the car probably won't turn a wheel in that time I guess we will see what the world is like in a month before worrying about whether to keep it within manufacturer tolerance or not (albeit that probably takes it into June anyway)

I was initially concerned about this applying to commercials as well as cars but much to my surprise, my Scania still had its mandatory 6-week inspection at the local dealer on Wednesday, basically, they are suspending MOT testing but the safety inspections carry on as normal.

Why would you think it wouldn't have its 6 weekly inspection?

Capacity to carry them out, a lot of commercial dealers have closed which puts an additional workload on those left still open, didn't think they necessarily would have cancelled the inspection but equally would not have been surprised if they had.

I would imagine that your company has the trucks on a maintenance contract with the dealers , so its going to be a last resort to shut the workshop , and I would imagine that all workers are classed as Key workers there too , I know I am at my workshop

Yes, pretty much this, anything newer than a 16 plate is on a full dealer R & M package , those that aren't are service / inspected in our own workshop.

And the spanners as we call 'em are most certainly key, we'd be pretty lost without them!

I've got an extended Toyota warranty that includes free MOTs, but which expires mid May 2020. I presume it will down to their generosity if they still give me the MOT for free, assuming I do it after that date (due in 3 weeks)? My local dealership has emailed me to say they are closed.
