The higher the CAT doesn’t mean it’s a better cable, it’s a different specification, there are trade offs.

For instance CAT5e is very flexible and can be put round much tighter bends than a CAT6a cable before it breaks. CAT6a is very stiff in comparison. CAT5e is also far easier and cheaper to terminate and just deal with in general if you need to make your own cables.

I finally pulled the trigger on a couple of Unifi APs last week and enjoying the results. Running two FlexHD APs and the controller on a Mac mini.

Great to finally have reliable roaming and consistent throughput and I'm tempted to go for a Unifi gateway of some sort. Are there rumours of a new smaller USG type device, or are the direct replacements Dream Machine / Dream Machine Pro?

The UDM has a router, controller, switch and AP in one package. The UDM Pro is router, switch and controller in a 1U rack mount package. To Pro can also run UniFi Protect - their CCTV system. You can't adobt them to an existing controller which rules them out for me.

I'd be tempted with a UDM-Pro if it could be adopted to an external controller.

Personally I'd hold out for the UXG-Pro and make a decision then. It'll be just a router that needs to be adopted to a controller, there won't (and can't) be a controller installed onto teh UXG-Pro. It'll be in a 1U rack mount package which may, or may not be good for you. No idea on timescales for it though, Ubnt said it was coming to the EA store 'soon' but they're terribly unreliable when it comes to keeping to their own timescales plus with Covid-19 they'll be even worse.

I was originally holding out for some decent UDM availability in the UK but it's still flakey and overpriced right now.

Rackmount isn't an option right now but will be definitely be in consideration for when we move out of the city in a year or two.

Thanks for the info

If rack mounted is a non starter then your options are limited to USG-3P or UDM. I've got a USG-3P and it does the job well enough but I probably wouldn't buy one now.

The UDM would work fine but I guess you don't need a third access point? You could probably sell one of your FlexHD units for a good price. UDM pricing seems very variable, the cheapest I've seen it recently is about £350 delivered but I'm sure i've seen it lower than that in the not too distant past.

Correct - I'll keep a look out for UDM pricing and sell one of my FlexHD if I ended up getting one

More than rumours. The product that has been trailed is a USG 4P replacement called the UMG (Unifi Management Gateway) and that is supposedly the same device as the UDM Pro without the built-in switch, controller and hard drive. But it's still a 19" rackmount device. Price has been suggested at something between $100 and $150 so £100-£150 in the UK. And it's not even in Early Access yet, so I'd say you're looking at an on-sale window between September this year and March next year.

If you don't mind a bit less GUI control the ER-4 and ER-6P are excellent devices.

It’s not actually GUI control, as the EdgeRouters have GUI control, with UniFi you make a change anywhere in the controller and it just updates everything on the network so it all works together. It’s a fabulous system, just plagued by underpowered (old) hardware and developers who believe their own hype but somehow don’t currently seem to be delivering on their promises. Chris Buechler - I mean your team!

Unless you want/need IPS/IDS And or QoS at full line speed over 450Mbps then there will be zero benefit in going to the UMG because the device itself is still constrained by the controller. For everything else the USG-4P is fine for lines coming in at up to 4Gbps.

Probably a bad time to be trying to buy that sort of stuff, as supply dried up for obvious reasons and resellers mark up their stock.

I'm still tempted by a UDM as for me it would appear it would give me the functionality I'd need, checking broadbandbuyer they've got them listed at £450 in stock flol.

I'm sure they were £299 when I was taking a look at them, and I cheaped out and went for an Amplifi solution instead.

That's clearly a pricing error. The UI EU Store has them for £285 delivered and that's not the cheapest I can find.

So I bought an AC-Lite to extend our network/fill in the gaps for £81 and despite scouring MM days before - nothing appeared on there. The day I receive the Lite*, an AC-LR appears in MM for £60.

A good price - what would you do?

*still at work and won't be able to test the Lite until late tonight or tomorrow.

Comes with a PoE injector so it must do :) - I know I probably don't need it but at £60, that's a steal and I guess I could resell or use if we move to a bigger house.
