How does a 2080 (non Super) 8GB compare to a 1080Ti for 3440 x 1440 res?

I can't find any comparisons of the 2080 8GB maybe because its EOL

Cards are
EVGA 2080 8GB FTW3 ULTRA GAMING Turing
EVGA 1080 11GB Ti SC Black Edition GAMING

I'd say its worth swapping if the process for doing so net zero because of added features and future proofing, driver etc. If you're paying more than £100 to do so then nah as the 1080Ti is a strong performer and the 2080 gains were weaker than an Italian bridge in terms of raw performance.

Does anyone ‘need’ RTX? It’s not even noticable yet, at least in a couple of the games that use it
Depends. There are some games now where it actually makes a big difference to visual quality. Metro Exodus and Wolfenstein Youngblood for example. What's far more interesting in terms of RTX features is the new DLSS though, which is genuinely impressive to the point that it's preferable over native resolution in Control and Wolfenstein Youngblood. You also get the more minor Turing benefits like integer scaling and VRS, plus the 2080 is a little faster than the 1080 Ti and uses a bit less power. Of course, the trade-off for all this is the VRAM. It remains to be seen how 8GB will hold up with next-gen titles. I certainly expect it to become the new minimum at least.

In any case, I probably wouldn't bother swapping a 1080 Ti for a 2080 at this point, with Nvidia teasing Ampere. If the past couple of generations are any indicator, the 3060 should offer 2080 performance at a much lower price point, with ongoing driver support and likely improvements to RTX performance.

^ This. Unless you are getting either of those cards for a massive discount then waiting a couple more months for Ampere will be the best bet, in fact ampere will cause the prices on those two cards to drop even further.

Not worth it, the 2080 is not even as much as 15% quicker.... and you're loosing 3GB of VRam.

What if the two cards are the same price, which would you pick for 4k / 3440x1440?

If that's your question, then the 2080 is the better choice.

AS for "needing RTX" well some of those RTX features like Variable Rate Shading, Mesh Shaders, Sampler feedback and Ray Tracing that are coming to consoles and AMD cards in the form of Directx 12 ultimate.

RTX also includes DLSS, which was just released last month and is DLSS done right.

Then there is VRSS for VR, which works really well.

I wouldn't buy a 1080ti over a 2080.

Techspot/Hardware Unboxed recently did a comparison of the GTX1080TI and the RTX2070 Super:

The RTX2070 Super is a bit slower than the RTX2080:

What you should get is dependent on the price and warranty. It is also dependent on what games you want to play too.

Edit!!

Just saw you have a GTX1080TI in another thread. I would keep your money,as the RTX2080 isn't really worth it,unless you can get a good deal on a RTX2080,and sell the GTX1080TI,and get a good price for it. The other thing is you will also loose 3GB of VRAM.

Really, even with the 3GB VRAM drop. I’ve found a few comparisons now of both with games and benchmarks and the 1080Ti is still better - quite a lot better in some tests

Edit, remember it’s not the super. Just 2080 8GB
Thanks all

The 2080 is definitely the faster card. But the difference is marginal (5-10%). If you have a 1080Ti already then I wouldn’t bother and wait for next gen which will have far better gaming and RTX performance. And hopefully reasonably priced :p.

2080, 2070 super and 1080ti are all roughly the same performance.

But, the 2080 and 2070 Super will be faster in newer games.

However, they will completely stomp the 1080ti in any games using DLSS, Ray Tracing or any of the Directx12 ultimate features. And those are the types of games that are coming. Because consoles are using the same directx 12 ultimate features, they will have more of an impact on PC games than before.

If you are choosing between the two, the 2080 is a better buy. That's a fact.

If you're choosing which to buy, check what warranty they have. Are they used? I'd rather have a new 2060 with full warranty than a used 2080 without warranty. Even if they were the same price.

If you're getting the 2080 for a net spend of 0, then do it because its a no brainer.

However if you're having to spend money out of your own pocket, I'd be waiting for the 3xxx series release.

2080 is the faster card now. With drivers, thats been put to bed IMO. I know some early benches showed the 1080ti potentially pulling ahead in a few titles before. Also Ray tracing and especially DLSS 2.0 might end up being a almost unfairly good feature in some games.

What happens at 3.5 / 4k with AA when VRAM runs out out the 8GB 2080?

I'd personally sacrifice 3GB of VRAM for RTX, DLSS 2.0 (which will likely be more and more supported from this point onwards and if Control is a good example; is absolutely insanely good), better driver support in the future.

Pick your poison. If you'd rather hold onto the 3GB of VRAM for the games which require 11GB of VRAM (I couldn't name many), then go for it.
