New M.2 Drive issue

Hi all

Today i got my new 500gb M.2 drive, Before installing it my PC would start up fine and i could access the BIOS, However since installing it my screen stays off until it's at the sign in point :confused:

I tried mashing the delete button while it was starting but that just made the screen stay off completely and not even go to the sign in part :confused:

Any help much appreciated

Most likely fastboot has been enabled in the bios, this prevents the bios screen appearing. What you will need to do is clear the cmos so you can get into the bios.

alternatively hold shift when you restart, click enter bios and away you go!

Just tried the Shift trick but that just held on a black screen but the PC started up and was running :confused:

Looks like i'll have to take the battery out

Pesky fastboot. I had this very issue the first time I put an nvme in my x399 board. Weirdly the board seems to just think, nvme is fast so fastboot! Similarly I was testing a card out for sale the other day, a sapphire card and I didn't realise that there is something in my ASRock x399 Taichi bios that checks what card and will display different bios screen and splash screen images depending on the brand of card you have in it. I never even knew this was a thing until about a week ago.

Ohh i didn't know that either, we learn something new everyday :cool:

it's in AHCI mode is that OK?
Boot Mode is Legacy & Uefi?

ACHI is fine if windows works and you are getting rated speeds

Boot mode being both will most likely mean its rocking Uefi especially if you are windows 10.

Ahh OK brilliant, I don't have a clue what the difference is, I'll have to have a read up for it... Thanks for your help mate, I'd be stuck if it wasn't for this forum

A pleasure dude.

It's much easier when somebody else has seen the issues before.

Stolen from google as they say it better than I can, but ahci is an updated feature set of the SATA standard and does away with the old IDE standard:

"AHCI stands for Advance Host Controller Interface. It is a newer technology to provide advanced features to the Serial ATA standard. ... SATA IDE Compatibility Mode disables AHCI however it will allow you to install older operating systems such as Microsoft's Windows XP without the need to install AHCI controller drivers."

In terms of UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), and this is me rather than google but effectively UEFI is a replacement for the old BIOS standard, again offering advanced features that effectively allows software further up the stack to interface with what used to be the BIOS. You know that ryzen master tool? That utilises UEFI by interfacing the app to the board and effectively making bios changes from within windows. UEFI is simply a name for an advanced BIOS introducing the above as well as things like mice control etc within the bios.

I am also one for writing but I thought you might find this method interesting, its kind of linking aspects of particular subjects and working out how things fit together, the idea is to try and gain a more whole understanding on a particular subject and the aspects surrounding it. Every now and again I go and add extra bits into certain subjects as It helps me remember stuff, this book is full front to back with different subjects that I wanted to know more about:

The large majority of it is written in pencil so I can go back and update things etc. It's quite sad I know but something I do for revision or just to get a better understanding in a given area

That's actually pretty impressive, could you trust me some more in depth explanation to it if you don't mind... I've just wrote all page after page

Intesting way of learning and remembering that, not seen that before!

Believe it or not its one of very few take aways from school. There was this one science teacher who was absolutely awesome and he taught us all about mind relationship diagrams. We used to have to do these around science subjects and its followed me into life.

I used them extensively during my degree and am still using them now I am nearly 40. Some things just stick and this for me was one of them, if the rest of the teachers I met during my study were half as good as that science teacher was I probably would have come out with better than a 2:1 from a middling uni.

I actually went back to visit him some 20 years later at some open day where I was giving a talk on technology (I do it for many of the local schools as I provide them with decommissioned kit once I am finished with it rather than it going to landfill or being melted down), its like a careers day fair thing that all the schools do where you talk to older pupils about careers and opportunities - It was great to actually let this guy know he was probably the only teacher I still remember and have respect for to this day. Weirdly he actually remembered teaching me. Probably the name to be fair, not many Vince's about.

Nice work and ncie to hear something positive, I'm the same with one of my teachers, I'm nigh on 45 now, but Mr Hazzledine was an old teacher I had and he sticks because of the way he conducted himself, it's a shame some teachers don't have a love of teaching and treat it as a job. I did my degree in Mathematics and I tought for a year, however was just outstanding how times have changed and the lack of respect for teaching nowdays and went back into IT, a shame as I enjoyed it, but it is what it is. You're obviously a visual learning kinda guy... not just the words it's the forms they're in like you say relationship disgrams, it's a patern and flow... great idea though, pity they didn't teach things like this and "how to learn" as opposed to "remember these facts".
