Best graphics card for about £150

Hi all,

I'm looking to spend about £150 on a new GFX card.

I've been looking at the 1650 super. The one I've seen is *** COMPETITOR LINK REMOVED ***

I would like something a bit future proof and from what I've been reading a bit more VRAM is favorable. I would be gaming at 1080p and I don't game a whole lot anyway. I've been looking at some 590's too, but they are up at about £170/180. I don't mind stretching a bit more if it's worth it.

I usually spend around £220 which is super 1660 territory. But i'm thinking the 1650 super would be fine and if I save that £70 now I could upgrade later when decent ray tracing cards are affordable if I really really want to/need to.

Thanks

I'd probably be inclined to find an RX 590 in that price range, due to the larger frame buffer at 8GB.

You'll find most reviews concentrate on FPS, which doesn't tell the whole story - having a larger frame buffer means the GPU won't have to switch out textures and other information as often, something that can take a split second to do, which the user will notice as a stutter.

An RX580 would be fine, I'd take one over a 1650S due to the VRAM limitations as mentioned by @MrRockliffe

The next step would be a 1660S.

OCUK were selling an Asus RX580 8GB for around £160 not so long ago, failing that the second hand market is an option.

5500XT is another option - similar performance to an RX580, but a little on the pricey side at the minute due to being newer (and supply shortages etc)
They currently come with the
AMD RAISE THE GAME GPU BUNDLE - RESIDENT EVIL 3, MONSTER HUNTER WORLD & XBOX 3 MONTH PASS
which if not of interest to you can be resold for £20-£30, bringing the prices down a bit to a more competitive level

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £390.48 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Can you recommend one please? I can only find ones for about £180. Or what about a 580 (some form of OC edition)?

The XFX one I assume you’ve found is a no go - I’d look to an RX 580 with a respectable cooler.

Alternatively, as mentioned, a 5500 XT might be a good idea, and after selling the games, would be quite competitively priced too.

Should also run cooler and quieter :)

A 590 is just a 580 with a bit of a clock speed overclock at the factory. You can overclock the 580 yourself and save money. Literally move a couple of slides and hit save. Plenty of videos how to do it.

RX 580 is your best bet. MSI gaming X models are usually the good variants of AMD cards, Sapphire has great cooling but have 2 year warranty compared to MSIs. The problem is not a lot of cards around at decent prices atm. Not the best time to buy a GPU atm, next gen may be around the corner but if you need to buy rx 580 is a good option. 1660 super is too pricey atm for an alternative upgrade.

Thanks for that. I checked and it looks like those cards would probably be nearer the end of the year? That's quite far yet. And it looks like they won't have midrange cards, looks like the 3070 and 3080. That will probably help push prices down but would you see the 1660s for 150?

I don't understand the point in the 5500XT. They've brought out a new graphics card to compete with their own graphics cards.

Will they eventually stop making 500 series and just have the 5000 series?

Yes - 500 series has been discontinued for a while, but there's probably still massive stocks due to the previous demand when people were using them to mine altcoins etc.

Hey, how long do you think the new cards will take to arrive and how much impact that would have on current prices? I actually bought a MSI 580 OC for someone for about 165 last year August and it's not budged a whole lot pricewise...

Also, what are thoughts on the Powercolor 580?

Thanks

Which one? There's a few.

Ok, I think im going to go for MSI RX 5500 XT MECH OC 8 GB for about 185 and try and sell the games. Any thoughts? And any ideas how much I could make selling the games?

Thanks
