Whenever the Russian government gets upset, it does what every troll does: it logs into social media and spreads lies to aggravate everyone else.

For six years, a mysterious group has used forged documents and a network of burner accounts to spread misinformation promoting Russian national interests, according to a new report from Graphika.

Dubbed “Secondary Infektion,” the campaign spanned a number of online platforms, beginning on the Russia-based LiveJournal in 2014, and moving to Twitter and YouTube later that year. In the years that followed, the campaign shifted to Reddit, Medium, and even the user-generated portion of BuzzFeed. All told, the report spans more than 2,500 pieces of content, posted across seven languages and more than 300 different forums, websites, and social networks.

“By April 21, 2020, Graphika had identified some 250 images that the operation had planted in its articles, almost all of them suspected forgeries,” the report states. “We expect that more remain to be found.”

According to researchers, the content tended to promote themes that align with Russian national interests during the period, including the unreliability of Ukraine, hostility to NATO interventions, or personal attacks on critics of the Kremlin or Russian government. The campaign took particular aim at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which instituted a four-year ban on Russian involvement in international sports after finding evidence of doctored lab results.

Shocked Pikachu face...................
Maybe one day the government will release that report into Russian interface they promised as well.

Probably still sitting on Boris desk, unread.

I imagine what the OP is referring to is just the tip of the iceberg though.

And misinformation is clearly working. 20 years ago Russia were still considered a bit of a boogeyman to US voters. Now a lot of voters there would seem a lot happier with their leaders/congressman having Russian connections.

I would hope that this isn't shocking to anyone by now and I wouldn't be surprised if Russia was the only ones doing it. I don't just mean the "bad guys" like China, North Korea, Iran etc either but also the reverse where the US/UK and other western countries etc were doing similar back at their targetted countries. You'd have to be pretty naive to believe that a lack of physical conflict means that conflict by "other means" isn't still taking place every day.

Governments have been manipulating since they originated.

They have the right though as the Americans(depending who's is power) always create war level tensions between them with threats, sanctions and air defence systems. So it's not totally ununderstandable.

I think their mentality is kind of, leave us alone and we won't bother you sort of thing. However the globalists want everybody under one set of laws.

Haven't heard of LiveJournal for a long time, that goes right back to the 90s.

I don't recall many poisonings overtly taking place on our shores from other nations in recent times?

People don't understand Russian history, traditions, mentality and culture. Very proud people who have gone through incredible suffering between Lenin and Stalin. Communism is contrary to everything Christian and prosperous, Lenin introduced it in the 1910's and they've been battling to escape from it for decades. Not so easy.

It builds the State up to be God like and as a result they can't risk showing any kind of weakness etc.

So what? That doesn't give them free reign. It also doesn't mean we should allow them to easily influence our government or population.

After all, we love democracy... apparently.

If it’s more than one page then yes, unread.

Found the KGB (or is it FSB now?) plant guys!:D:p;)

What's the solution though? Every nation goes full Great Wall of China mode? I don't see that happening.

Really, what can be done? Except every post on every social media site requires authentication by real world ID? Don't think the libertarians will back that.

If we want a free and open internet, it's open to being abused. It's like removing all the CCTV in London and there being loads more crime, but at least you've got your privacy right?

If Russia are attacking the west then the way they are doing it is through the left, if you've spent the last 3-4 years attacking democratically elected western leaders and democratic decisions like Brexit then chances are you are victim of propaganda from countries like China and Russia. The massive division and anti-UK/US sentiment you see now even among our own citizens (again mostly among those on the left) is probably a result of outside work, we have a generations of youth who have been taught that love of ones country is some far right evil, we have media reporting that riots are largely peaceful and defending our countries history is far right thuggery.

The corporate media should take responsibility and have their funding investigated, the way they talk the UK/US are the most horrible countries on Earth. I don't think it's a coincidence that most of the BLM/Antifa rioters recently were mostly young adults and teens as they're the most easily influenced.

Due diligence - who the hell are Graphika ? what credentials do they have

If you look at their fancy, non-professional 'dedicated'/specific web-site ..it is missing that vital information

Acknowledgments
Many experts helped make this report possible. Particular credit goes to the Facebook lead investigator who uncovered the very first assets of Secondary Infektion, and to the broader Facebook investigative team. We are deeply grateful to the investigative teams at Twitter, Quora, Reddit, and Medium for their insights and perspectives on this campaign, which they kindly offered as we disclosed assets used by Secondary Infektion on their platforms. Our research benefited from the work of the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab) and insights shared by Jack Stubbs and Raphael Satter of Reuters and by Adam Rawnsley of the Daily Beast. Sam Meyer, a Research Associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, was generous with his time and expertise in analyzing the images we found. The Internet Archive provided kind and patient assistance in ensuring that the operation’s digital artifacts and forensics traces could be preserved and organized for further study.

Finally, we would like to thank our colleagues, peers, and friends in the open-source community who reviewed, refined, and validated our findings.

so what percentage of the minsinformation they found was related too that ? ie are they making a mountain out of a mole hill.

You really do live in some alternate dimension don't you.

Not too sure about the corporate media part but the rest is quite plausible. Although I think it's still a hangover from the 2008 recession.

You really do live in some alternate dimension don't you.

Or, to play Devils Advocate, is it possibly you in the alternate dimension? Who knows!

As the modern way of media consumption for both "sides" seems to be "stay in your echo chamber" it's very possible that, if you only take your sources of information from one single view point i.e. "the Left is bad" or "the Right is bad", your perception of what is "really" happening will be heavily skewed from what is actually happening. It's sadly a rarity nowadays to try and get a balanced view by listening to both sides, to getting information from a range of varied sources, because very few people want to listen to "the other side" because their echo chamber tells you that the "other side" are disgusting people, whether they are Evil Nazis on the Right or Evil Commies on the Left, and no-one wants to listen to the "evil" side of the story do they.

There is an ebb and flow through-out history of the political views from people in the "Western" world moving further Left/Right then contracting to being very Centralist (just a little Left/Right with lots of cross-over), then moving back further Left/Right again as the cycle continues. The "Western" world (again people, not the Governments) was generally, but not exclusively, more centralist in political views through-out the 80's, 90's and 2000's and, after so much time being relatively Centralist, people are just undergoing yet another expansion back to being further Left/Right, as seen in this US graph below. I doubt a version from every Western Country would be that much different and a 2020 versions would show the divide being even wider -

What happens as this move away from the Centre gets more distinct is guesswork but based on prior events, both sides move further away until there is a disastrous conflict which shocks people back to Centre. Then the cycle repeats endlessly.

Neo-liberalism wasn't centrism, it was the height of venality and people rightly acknowledged this, only they veered off into their tribes as per human nature, so nothing has fundamentally changed other than people being more emotionally involved.

So in essence it's correct, that there's a cycle, but there's a good reason for people getting fed up and it has everything to do with a fundamental moral collapse.
