Which GPU as a stop-gap for 1440p gaming until Q4 new gen releases?

Hi guys, I can get a Gainward GeForce GTX 1650 Pegasus OC 4GB for £110... do you think that should be ok for a "quick and dirty" stop-gap solution until AMpere is released?

Specs here: https://www.game-debate.com/hardware/index.php?gid=4525&graphics=GeForce GTX 1650 Gainward Pegasus OC 4GB

I could also keep it as a long-term spare for when I ever change GPU's. A 1660 Super is almost 2x the price at £204.

That's a really weak card at 1440p. Even the RX 570 and 580 easily beats that card. If you want a cheap tide you over 1440p card, here you have a Fury for £150 (this was the 980 ti competitor):

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/b-gr...s-card-with-backplate-11247-03-bg-148-sp.html

It should be on par on average with a 1660 Super. But some newer titles at 1440p the VRAM may struggle with. You could even try to message them to bring the price down.

Edit - just checked and the Fury gives 48 FPS average on Witcher 3 with Ultra settings at 1440p compared to 50 FPS average of a 1660 Super.

Thanks for the advice chap. I would only use it to play older RTS/RPG games and I am looking for a "quick and dirty" stop-gap solution for as little outlay as possible until Ampere arrives. I need to compromise and lower my expectations as a result, and the 1650 would do the job unless I can find a used GTX 1070 8GB which would be my ideal solution. While I realise they are good AMD value options out there, I am not considering them at the moment.

Hardware Unboxed gave the 1650 a poor review mate and it's only considered a 1080p card, even for games like Witcher 3 and Skyrim with mods will suffer at 1440p.

The 1650 from what I understand is a low powered card aimed at people who have PSUs without 6 pin/8 pin power connectors. So it suffers allot. The 1650 Super is a far stronger card. The Fury is way stronger than the 1650 and was designed for 1440p gaming. At 1440p you'll notice the difference with a Fury

If you don't go for the Fury I posted, second hand 1660, 1070, 980 ti, Vega, Fury cards would be ideal.

BTW the B Class Fury card I posted even has a 3 year warranty and is a Saphire cooler, which is one of the best AMD coolers.

If you let me know what you're coming from I can let you know the respective cards comparative performance

My gtx 1070ti still seems ok at 1440p although I am planning on replacing aswell later on this year, the way I'd see it is to just grab a used 1070, 1070ti or 1080 then just sell again for most likely what you brought it for when the new cards release.

If you buy new then you will lose some resale value although you get the warranty cover I guess.

I have looked at benchmarks and seen how it performs:

When I say 'older games', I mean older RTS/RPG games like Empire At War, M&B Warband etc and I would never think of playing Skyrim or Witcher 3 on anything less than a powerful enough card as it is not worth playing them in any less than their full glory. For my older and far less demanding strategy games, a 1650 will be adequate at 1080p or 1440p. I will not consider an AMD card at the moment and that is not up for discussion.

I live abroad so can't buy from the OCUK or the MM and my used options locally are sadly limited.

GTX 1070 8GB would be perfect, but my local used market is terrible and options are slim to say the least.

It's your money and your choice mate. If you're happy playing older games that should be fine. It can be worth looking at optimisation guides for newer games to tinker with. Turning some settings down or even playing on lower settings isn't as noticable as it once was

The only thing I'd say about the Ampere launch is prices are likely to drop after 3-6 months

I do appreciate the advice even if I can't follow it all! Luckily, I prefer most older strategy games to newer ones (mods also constantly give them new life), so playing them is no hardship and as you say I can lower details on newer games. Even going down from Ultra to High saves a ton of VRAM usage. :)

I will also buy Ampere on launch, I don't care about the price drops which will anyway be negligible. I just want to buy one and then get on with my gaming life for the next couple of years until the next upgrade. :D

Do they not have an auction site in your country mate? As that would be a go too option. Like @greatash says, you wouldn't take much of a hit if you bought and sold a 1070 when Ampere is released

Mate, getting a used bargain in my country with used hardware is like drawing blood from a stone... but no worries I shall just get smoething cheapand cheerful for that couple of months until Ampere hits. The weather is too nice to stay in my room gaming anyway. :)

Looks like I've sold my 2080 Ti for £900, going to buy a 5700xt or similar to see me through.
It looks like a good value card, barring the many reports of driver issues in the 5700 XT thread. It's still a lot to pay just for 3 or so months though.

Wel, in the end I just decided took some of your advice and decided to splurge a little extra and ordered a Gainward GTX1660 Super Pegasus 6GB for £200. https://www.gainward.com/main/vgapro.php?id=1073&lang=en

Performs around the same as the GTX 1070 and will do me fine until I upgrade over the next few months. :)

Looks a decent buy. And depending on what you're playing you might not even need an ampere replacement.

Has your 1070 died? You might be able to contact the manufacturer and RMA it for a replacement/fixed 1070

I am definitely getting a Ampere replacement and then enjoying it for the next couple of years, there is zero question of that! :D

Thanks for the suggestion but the 1070 was in a notebook and even if it wasnt it wouldnt be worth paying to fix an old card as it would likely cost a much as if not more than a new 1660 Super. :)

Well, I now have the Gainward Pegasus 1660 Super installed and it performs very well with my 3300x and is so cool and compact... very happy with it. Thanks for all of your advice guys I appreciated it. :)
