I'm in a bit of a pickle. I'm upgrading my 7700k & mobo but cant decide if i want the 10700k + Z490-E, or 3900x + X570-E. I only game (at 1440p 165hz) with some very light Fusion360 modeling. The Intel route is cheaper and will provide more FPS (although only a very slight increase) but the AMD will be better for multitasking and workloads. Fusion 360 doesn't use hardly any resources so the whole multitasking performance will be wasted on me. I also have to consider resale value, as well as what rocket lake / zen3 will offer.
Thanks for any input you guys / gals can provide :)
 
I don't get why you're comparing an 8 core Intel with a 12 core AMD CPU, then commenting that Intel is cheaper - something you'd expect as it has 4 fewer cores?

Why not go for a 3700X if you really need 8 cores, though it sounds like you could easily make do with a 3600 tbh.
 
Why not compare with the 10700? It's a cheaper way to get 8 cores and can be 'overclocked' via the power limits with many boards: TPU: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i7-10700/

Like said above though, if you only need 8 cores, look to the 3700X.

Assuming Z490 compatibility with rocket lake, I doubt that it will outperform Ryzen 4000 by much, if at all. It wouldn't put me off investing in X570/B550.
 
You either need those extra cores or you don't. Like for like comparison and AMD wins out unless your goal is 1080p gaming on a 2080ti. Maybe a 3800XT if you want a little IPC bump and closer gaming performance to Intel.
 
If you dont need multitasking stick to 6C12T cpus. At that point your question is whether the minimum £100 price premium for z490 + 10600k over a B450 Max + 3600 is worth the extra handful of fps?
 
Are you upgrading the graphics card also? If so go for the cheaper of the two and spend more on the GPU.

I'd go 3900XT if I were you but above all I'd wait for at least a week until benchmarks/reviews are out. I'm on a 5960X and will defo upgrade to Ryzen 4000 which will be your best upgrade by a country mile. Wait until Next gen Ryzen launches unless mentally ill or sitting on someone else's money/it's burning a hole in your pocket. Just like GPU upgrades now is NOT the time to buy a new CPU, Buy Nov/Dec or March. 7700k will be fine for 6 months unless you absolutely HAVE to upgrade now.

And I would go 3700x as well. (Gaming only)

But if you do use it for work and single core is beneficial, then go intel

I've got a 7700k, and I'm waiting for next gen Ryzen, loved your comment "unless mentally ill " made me giggle

This really. Save for another 6 months and wait until all the new toys come out at the end of the year and make the call then.

I've definitely got my eye on a Ryzen 4000 and new GPU.
