More than a 5700XT. That's the point. AMD are playing catchup, again.

I wish it weren't so, but AMD haven't been competetive on features and can't compete at the top end right now. Turing is on the way out and there still isn't an AMD card that can match a 2080 Ti. Let's hope that picture changes over the coming months.

I must be a tight **** as i felt pained paying £500 for a 1080 a few years back and am not sure if i can do that again unless i'm getting 4x the power of the 1080 or something.

Come back in about 6-10 years if that is what you are after as progress on the price for performance front seems to be slowing down.

double the general performance of a 1080 for £500 if you're lucky later this year, there isn't a 4x product on the horizon anytime soon for any price which as TNA says could easily be 5yrs+ away.

I'm not sure how a single generation of stagnation erased everyones memory of the prior generational advancements and lowered expectations.

I mean, Turing was bad in that regard, but it really seems to have gutted expectations.

Exactly this, performance expectations have plummeted and price expectations have skyrocketed, as if that is the norm.
Well it isn't the norm otherwise GPU's would have intel style incremental performance increases and prices well. NVidia have been making GPU's for 25 years if they doubled the price every time then we would be paying a lot more than the currant prices for sure.

Bottom line Turing isn't the norm its the exception.

Can anyone name any other company that nearly doubles its price each generation?

Also on a 1080, though was 400 quid second hand. Double performance currently costs about £1000 as a 2080Ti is almost double.

Second hand 2080Ti will probably be best value for the foreseeable once these new ones are out.....

If the VidCardz slide is accurate AMD need to gain 75% over the 5700XT to match the 3800TI/3900.

Doubling the 5700XT at the same ~1.95Ghz would do that, easily.... the rumoured 505mm Big Navi is that and maybe a little more, the PS5 console runs at 2.23Ghz, that's 15% higher clocks.

We could be in for a proper fight at the high end again

Indeed. That is why I have been expecting 2080Ti performance from the 3070 yet most people are laughing their head off at that idea for some reason. But I am not surprised. The same happened when the 980Ti was king when I said the 1070 would match it and be much cheaper and most could not get their head around the idea. Lol.

That said I do think progress is slowing down. With manufacturing to smaller nodes getting harder and more expensive, unless these companies make a breakthrough in architectures we will won't see price for performance improvement like we used to.

I would rather not thanks.

If we all did that prices will keep creeping up and we will get to a point where mid level cards are £1200 and when they release at £999 we will be all "pleasantly surprised".

That is my expectation yes. £499 being the max. That said, I really hope it is more than 8gb though.

Yeah. If Turing "progress" is the norm, GPU's will cost as much as a new car in 10 years....a small house in 20 years.

I bet some people would still say "gotta pay to play" lol.

Some would. Lol.

End of the day prices for gaming cards can only go so far before they end up being bad for business. I still have no issue with them releasing a Titan card that is actually quite a bit better than the xxTi version and charge 2-5K for it. No issue with the people who are happy to part with the cash being milked.

What I do have an issue with is price for performance being stagnated, just like Intel did. I did not upgrade my CPU for over 6 years because of that. The same will end up happening with GPU’s, but I don’t think Nvidia will do that. Hence why I am expecting better price for performance like you, relative to most here who essentially seem to be happy with a 10-20% performance bump at the same price point which is not good enough.

Funny you should say that.

How many people these days are spending £££ (hundreds) on loot boxes, funny hats for the online chars, etc. There's cash being splashed about (by gamers) and maybe nV is just getting more ruthless in wanting a larger share of that cash.

The Zotac blower sale here at £899 was worth it.Thats why i went for it waiting ages for mainstream perf that is 2x a 1080 is a long wait. Nvidia might put the perf into Raytracing and give it 8gb of ram which would totally cripple it and you would be looking at £1200 -£1400 for a 3080ti.

Vram can be a nasty bottleneck at 4k too and there is no 5yr warranty on second hand goods. Gotta commend Gibbo on that one tbh.

Well they need to do that all the while improving price for performance. Could they not just make bigger more expensive die’s for the Titan for example and charge a premium on that. That would let people with the cash get something better, all the while the rest of the plebs being happy with status quo which has been the case the past decade or so?

End of the day if Nvidia or AMD keep bringing huge improvements to on price for performance, most people will be happy. I know I would, I could not give two ***** if someone wants to spend the cost of a brand new card on the top of the line gpu, more power to them. But this needs to clearly be on huge die’s that you can tell cost a lot more than usual to produce, not on 500-700mm2 dies.

Since people kept mentioning their unhappiness at another round of 8Gb cards I've made a point of looking at the usage now after gaming for a few hours.

AC Odyssey @ 4K max settings peaked at 75% VRAM usage of my 11Gb 2080Ti. Guess it could be a problem sooner than I realised if the majority of cards next gen are still using 8Gb VRAM.

That's 8.4Gb VRAM usage.
