Not sure if being serious :p but unlikely to be required (although we would all love faster Internet - can get 1Gb where I live in Salisbury now :D).

With the storage and asset management that next gen has thanks to the SSD's this should mean that in theory there should be less requirement for large game files as common textures typically required to be stored in multiple locations to reduce search times on standard HDD's aren't needed meaning game sizes should come down.

The games will be huge, it's inevitable. The Last of Us II is 99GB, even with a bit less duplication of assets etc on the next gen they're still going to balloon in size due to increases in detail.

One can live in hope that devs do their best to optimise and can keep things as small as possible whilst retaining great visual fidelity I would imagine it will be a bit of a balancing act.

The physical games are still only going to be on Blu-ray so if one disc it'll be 50GB / 2 discs then 100GB max etc. else we will be looking back (fondly) to PS1 times with multiple discs needed for installing assets along with a DRM disc.

The discs will become key files that just allow you to play. They will fit what they can on disc then the rest will be a content download you have to have, and subsequent game updates beyond 1.0 will be a full digital download.

Maybe for PS6 or 7. Right now the infrastructure is not there for that. Many people still on super slow internet. Imagine having to download 100gb+ games. Lol.

Yeah, I imagine there'll be greater pressure on them to do so given the somewhat pitiful size of the SSD and the new compression technologies they've briefly touched on should help, but I think it's unrealistic to expect games to suddenly shrink dramatically in size when they've gradually grown larger and larger over the current generation. Asset duplication isn't going to be solely responsible for that.

An external USB HDD is going to be become a mandatory addition to the next gen, I imagine.

well that’s a very real reality right now so ‍♂️
We will see, but I can’t imagine if games get bigger like some say that this would be the case. Imagine downloading 200gb game with a non fibre internet. They will just put games on discs even if it means 3 or 4 I recon. Could be we eventually get bigger 100gb blu ray discs also.

Nkt that it would make any difference to me. Got a 100 meg line now and could have 1gb one if I wanted. But I don’t see myself needing anything faster any time soon.

That's one advantage to pre-orders. I've been digital for years, even when I had a 4meg line... put my PS4 in standby overnight and off in the day to let it download.

I've got 35meg now and still more than happy to download the 100gb+ games. If you want to play it at midnight, pre-order it a week early to give it time to download. There's also the new Kraken compression which the PS5 has adopted. Not sure if that will be usable for distribution or not.

Also,m you can prioritize the segments of the game to download too, SP / MP / Both etc.

Thing is a lot of people are not patient enough for that judging by this forum. I am happy having a few games installed at a time, but people want their whole library installed and ready to play when they want and are willing to pay hundreds of pounds in storage cost to do so.
We will see how it goes, won’t make a difference to me personally.

Far Cry 6 got leaked by PlayStation Hong Kong ahead of its announcement on Sunday (presumably)

You also get a free upgrade to the PS5 version if you buy it on PS4.

That's another option. I put a 2TB internal into my Pro when I bought it, and also have a 2TB external to move games to when I'm not playing them for that very reason. (this was back when I only had 4meg internet)

It takes a while to download 50+gb so it was easier to stick them on an external. Rather than download them again. I imagine i'll do something similar with the PS5 too. (I'll be buying the digital version)

I just hope these SSDs can stand the wear and tear of copying big games back and forth to it. Saying that, my PC's NVMe drive is still all right after two years of Windows throwing all kinds of rubbish at it.

What do you mean 4K disc? I don’t think that’s a thing, they’re all just multi layered Blu-ray does.
I meant they are both 4k players so you can store a lot more on a disc (I think around 100gig). As they will both support it from the off it might happen. I think 4k discs have more layers.

The PS5 will use regular 4 layer Blu-ray discs.

I still don’t know what you mean by a 4K disc. The output resolution of the device is independent of the capacity of the storage medium, so even a single layer Blu-ray disc can have 4K media on it.
