Canvas bag morons at self-service tills

If you're cycling, then you need to be able to get it all in your backpack. So filling it on the way around the store guarantees you don't buy too much.
I do it on a motorbike, same principle, however, I use the shop and scan app which means I can pack as I go and barely touch anything beyond the shopping itself, ideal.

Because often the bags are too heavy for the 'weigh a bag' system to recognise.

Then you have to then call somebody over, which takes even longer.

And yes, paying 5p for a bag when you have a bag is just adding to the mass of plastic pollution we have.
This. I am a canvas bag carrier and have this issue. We're actually saving you time believe it or not.

You also need to empty the bag before you can put the bag on the scale and refill it. Are you suggesting they take everything out of the bag, put the bag on the scales and then scan and fill? It's not saving any time either

I use my own bag but use a trolley or basket to carry items on the way around. The self-service tills are bad at recognising your own bag, even if you press 'I'm using my own bag' so I prefer to scan everything in, pay and then pack the bag.

Sorry to inconvenience you OP. If it helps I tend to go shopping after 6pm so at least I won't delay your lunch by an extra minute.

tesco self scan systems don't like it when you put your own canvas bag on.

Guys I'm one of those numpties that would rebag the items rather than use an unsanitised basket.
3 weeks ago the tescos near me have removed the ebtry sanitiser stations, no one way signs either nor any form of entry control/ queuing.

Covid is the norm now i guess

Or use a basket like a normal person and then pack into the canvas bag?

Take item out of basket - scan item and put on the scales - repeat until finished - pay - fill canvas bag.

or

Take item out of canvas bag - scan item and put on the scales - repeat until finished - pay - fill canvas bag.

What difference does it make?

Fill the bag as you scan. Much quicker.

This is the whole point. The whole "fill the canvas bag" after paying thing doesn't need to happen. If you get several people doing it, the people further down the queue are held up significantly. I see it happen all the time, and it wastes so much time unnecessarily.

hhhmmm :( sometimes I do a quick run around various shops at the shopping precinct and use my bag for life as a basket, otherwise I'm carrying my bag and a basket. Makes more sense to me to just fill the bag and take out what I'm buying at the till or self-checkout.

Not when you have to get the assistant to "authorise" the bag which seems quite a common problem.

Which supermarkets allow you to weigh a bag - our JS/waitrose/Asda don't ...next time I need to request a qualified assistant

Not sure, how anyone picking into a bag achieves that .... anyway, if you're buying eggs/cream/milk3L/... they'd get crushed, wrongly positioned, so instead, you'd have to have a non-optimal route around store ... remember bridges of Konisberg ? or, if you are just buying 241 fast food, no issue.
avoiding crushables at the base of bicycle panier or rucsac is doubly needed - 3L milks are delicate. ... and make sure keys are not at bottom.

I did it once at the start of lockdown to avoid touching a basket.

but it's also good if you only have one bag to know how much you can carry I guess

also trying to load a bag on the scales is 75% chance of needing a member of staff, the weight shifting in the bag throws the scales

Spot on.

I had to fill up a hiking bag when there was 3 foot of snow and had to walk to asda.

I had to call the attendent over 10 times before they just stood behind me and swiped every time it went off.

Self service checkouts don't work for large bags.
