+1 best adviceTest drive many cars and make your own decision bud is what i say.
As said already, it’s a minefield sometimes. Have you considered going for a JDM car? Sometimes you get a decent car performance wise and they will be in a cheaper tax bracket. But the compromise might have to pay a bit more for the fuel and it will be an older car. A Civic type R was mentioned earlier, you can get a Honda Accord Euro R for the sort of money your talking about? I know this one is no longer available, but just thought you’d get a good idea.

Thanks, I haven't really thought about that option. I have a few weeks/months to ponder different ideas anyway. I've decided to make it a clean £10k too to find something. Its near the the M135 price range but honestly I don't want to stretch any higher right now, I need to replace the other car next year and need to put more money into that unfortunately!

Can you even fit 3 car seats across the back of these cars?

Dude test drive a load of cars first or you will be disappointed

Of course, I’d just like to narrow down the search before going to a dealer and testing every hatch they have. Plus I’m looking at 6-10 year old cars so not something I can just rock up at a dealer and drive.
