Leave the screen for the sat-nav, service information, and set-and-forget settings.

Even having a touch interface for adjusting the radio or climate settings is stupid.

Plus there are loads of clever and intricate design choices you can make if you use physical controls. They can be tactile, satisfying to use, nice to touch.

What did we do before touchscreens then? :confused:

I just want the standard stuff to be buttons and knobs. I love knobs. Stuff like sat-nav, once-in-a-lifetime settings, all that other rarely used stuff can go in the screen no problem, but I want volume up and down to be a rotating dial, I want my radio presets to be easily accessible (not necessarily buttons, but easy to access), and I want my HVAC controls to be right there, physical buttons. If I have to go through 27 screens whilst driving to turn the fans down, I'll take my business elsewhere.
 
I think some of you might be surprised at how many features on modern cars might need to be accessed while driving.

I can see the words you just wrote, I’m trying to apply them on my head to understand what you are saying. :confused:

So how would you want to put wade aid on in car activate wading? Or change ambient lighting? Or turn on dynamic sound in your EV? Or change pulse massage seats to wave. Or lock your centre diff. Or cameras for the tight multi-storey. Or in car payment for parking.

You can have a mixture of the two... :p

A lot of the things you mentioned come under "set and forget settings" like I said.

Cameras can go in there too because you only use them when parking etc. And the camera screen can automatically come on when you put it in reverse etc.

Touch screens have their place, but anything i might want to change when im driving I'd like to have a button. Climate controls, radio controls, comfort controls, lighting, wipers, that sort of thing.

What happens when the screen breaks if everything is controlled via it? The car becomes a brick.

And they will forever be covered in fingerprints.

And what about glare from the sun?

Even if some stuff has to be on a screen id prefer a touch sensitive pad on the centre console which i can use to control the menus, so I can avoid fingerprints.

You have both extremes! :D

I've driven (and indeed ridden in, or sat in) plenty of new-ish cars, company cars and stuff, even having the volume control for the radio on a touchscreen annoys the **** out of me! Give me a nice knob instead! (oh! matron) :p

But this is the epitome of car controls! I even binned the radio because you don't need it when you have an old BMW 6 in the front.

Well for example for the feature in the news article, auto wiper settings, mine are on the stalk beside the steering wheel and I can adjust the sensitivity of them without taking my eyes off the road.

Whereas if I want to change a setting like units of measurement, I do that through the central control unit as it's reasonably something I don't need to change whilst driving.
 
For me console/dash buttons are required for:

- climate temperature control
- heated seats (although automatic ones are the best -but it seems that tech died with the GM-platform cars :()
- volume control
- 'home' button for the screen

I've probably missed a few others, but those are really the only ones I need on the centre part of the dashboard. Pretty much everything else can be on a screen (unless it belongs on a stalk - e.g. wipers).
 
Id also want the seat heating and massage bits on buttons. Because I turn heated seats on and off. And i might want to so that with massage seats too.

And seek buttons for the radio, but they are usually on the steering wheel.

And the heated rear window/mirrors button.

But youve basically just agreed with my view. Kind of :p

Now im confused.

The thing with a button or knob is it's something which actually exists and you can feel or grab on to. When you grab a knob it also supports the weight of your arm, so it isn't bouncing up and down with the road surface.

With a touchscreen you have to look and concentrate on actually pressing the right spot.
