Saw this e23 728 on Hilton Park services yesterday, not seen an e23 in years never mind one as clean & tidy as this was.

Car makers remove buttons because it's cheap, and also means they can change and reassign everything without affecting instrument panel tooling/investment. So it make sense to do, just nobody likes it.
 
It makes sense in saving them money, it doesn't make sense for the user experience and as shown it can be dangerous as well. If there's a setting that needs to be changed while driving, there should be a button for it. (Unless it's one tap away on a touchscreen which isn't as bad)
 
Like Gordon Murray said, touchscreens are horrible and shouldnt be allowed in cars.

Hopefully more fines get dished out and they are forced to backtrack on it.
