Yup, I imagine that few people on this forum know what it was like to really see the true birth of GPU's, going from completely unaccelerated to accellerated graphics, and instead all they know are games that have always looked pretty and surrounded by this more modern cycle of evolutionary GPU releases.
The 90's and early 2000's were truly amazing times for PC (and also I guess console) gaming, a collection of the best and most creative and original titles ever created and I feel privileged to have been a part of it at an age where I could still be considered wide-eyed and impressionable. Few games have really given me the same sense of wonder and discovery since.

Thats probably just an age thing. We all feel that way about our teens/early twenties. VR did similar to me when i tried in a few months back, but it wore off quick.

Consoles dont directly relate though, they dont have dedicated VRAM, PS5 with 16GB RAM, 3-4 GB of that reserved for the OS, does the game then use some of that RAM? then whats left over probably about 8GB-10GB tops for "VRAM".
10GB will be ample for the majority of people. For those who wish to spend 8 hours flying over the Atlantic they may need more, possibly.

It's not an age thing. You got a new GPU back then and it literally made the game look 20 times better! It wasn't even just about FPS. It changed how it looked! it was amazing. And affordable.

Yeah my 750w will be good as long as I don't run Furmark, Prime 95, transferring 1TB data between drives and watching an 8k movie all at the same time

It is an age thing. Anyone who is around 40 now lived through that period of huge development - and now youre looking back with nostalgia. The graphics were crap compared to what we have now.
I will always remember going from a 2D Matrox card to a 2nd hand Voodoo 3. I was 16 at the time, so it took me a while to save up. My God did that change everything. Quake 2 was suddenly more than 30FPS, which literally made me 10x better at it, especially as much of the movement in the game came from reaching certain FPS. Without even looking at how much better it looked.

It's what often happens when a PC is basically your primary means of entertainment and the hobby turns into compulsive and obsessive behaviour. I was definitely on that side of the line once so I know and understand it well!

Being the older, wiser and more jaded individual that I now am, few games have really given me the same sense of wonder and discovery since.
Mate, my first gaming experience before my Atari was Pong. My Dad came back from a Jumble Sale with this brown and orange console with two joysticks on it and a big button, I remember being really excited as I'd never seen a games console before and at that time we didn't have a computer. If anyone doesn't know what Pong is... it's basically two white lines on either side of the TV screen with a square white dot... and you can make the white lines go up and down to keep the ball in play. That was it
From there on I got an Atari - and tbh some of my favourite gaming was on that - Monkey Island, Treasure Island Dizzy etc. etc.
From there on we got our first Pentium 133MHz.... and from there on it was Rise of the Triad, Duke Nukem, Doom.... then a new machine, Quake, Quake 2, Half Life, Half Life 2, Quake 3 etc.
I truly have seen the birth of GPUs
But for me it's quite interesting as I actually "retired" from PC gaming several years ago - I'd say around a decade ago. So imagine last seeing what the graphics were like 10 years ago, and then seeing what FS2020 looks like today.
I'm still spell bound by the fact that I can't see jagged lines, I don't know how anti-aliasing got so good but to me it's like magic. The graphics today are truly phenomenal and I cannot wait to get back into PC gaming, especially seeing what these new Graphics Cards can do.

Youre both looking at it with rose tinted glasses. Predominately due to age.
I started out back in the 286 and Windows 3.1 era up till now and I'd much rather be that same age now, experiencing all the advances in VR etc that my eldest son is now.
As for affordable, it was anything but affordable. PCs in general were horrendously expensive through the 80s and 90s and you needed to upgrade on a yearly basis just to keep up.
