3080 Stock Situation - Possible Update Later Today

If they're saying "it'll be sent out first come, first served, so please keep your place in the queue", shouldn't we be told where we are in the queue so we can make that decision? If you're 12th in the queue, you might want to wait, where as if you're 280th, you're probably going to want your money back to go elsewhere.

Elsewhere?

No one else will have them in stock for ages, apart from the scalpers on ebay.

The've also taken my money which I'm not happy about, that's not right.

OCUK have always done this. Nothing says they can't.

I doubt one can get them elsewhere and I doubt NVidia will offer FE versions anytime soon in any sensible amount either.

Fair point about the queue - they should let us know how far we are in respective queues!
At least good thing I chose TUF, as reviews are stellar and this seems to be the most common model. But even with that I might potentially need to wait till even end of year for it, whilst money's gone and interest is ticking on credit... I rather not!
Plus, I doubt it's a matter of hundreds of people waiting in queues - I suspect it's thousands.

Surely there is some kind of law about taking money on pre orders

Yep, the law says its fine.

Thats the point in pre-orders, to get money coming in prior to the product being released.

The only disappointing thing here is paying for a pre-order when a date was quoted which isnt going to be met, but theres a refund offered.

It's generally not the done thing, but it's legal.

There's a difference between being in the back of a queue of 10,000, and being at the back of a queue of 1000. People should be given their position in the queue for their card, so they can make the choice as a consumer. Transparency is the best way for OCUK to keep people who aren't getting a card happy.

Not impressive they took money for stock they might not be able to fulfill for months, but you can get a refund so its no major drama.

It's simple human psychology here, though. If you take money out, you're left with no card and you lose your spot in a queue (even though unknown where one is in it and how big it is). Ergo, you will feel very disappointed which humans try to avoid.
If you don't take money out, you are locked waiting for unknown time, in hope it will come just tomorrow (it won't). But at least there's hope instead of disappointment.
People tend to choose positive emotion (hope) instead of negative (disappointment). Sellers know it, so does NVidia. Most pre-orders will stay as they are, I reckon. And the shop has nice amount of money to invest in the meantime, interest free.

Yeah maybe. Ill see how it goes but wont bother with a refund for now.

Theres a flip side of that though, I can sit here for a month and then find one else where and cancel the order still. So the shop cant really invest the money till they actually fulfill the order, and with interest rates so low not like they will make much from holding it either.

Fully agreed, this is how it should be done!
However, chances are shop do not have a system in place to provide such info, aside simply sorting emails with orders by date and fulfilling one by one, moving them to "done" folder afterwards. Which means, they would've to manually count every single person in the queue, slap it into spreadsheet and send emails manually to people one by one about it. With potential thousands of pre-orders, I doubt it'll happen.

I have confirmation of payment at 14:02, confirmation of order at 20:43. Knowing my luck last place. The sad part is seeing the cards purchased by Scalpers on ebay for 1000's one even names another UK retailer (although not affiliated). Would have been nice to start getting scores up on HWbot

Without a solid schedule of delivery quantities you still wouldn't know which was the best queue to be in...

A queue of 1000 with only 5 cards a week arriving is a lot worse than the queue of 10,000 getting 1,000 a week being delivered...

Once there is more certainty on the delivery pipeline I'm sure OCUK will be as helpful as they can regarding orders, but right now getting a queue position is meaningless...

I was gonna cancel and wait till later in the year, but after watching that Gamers nexus video i guess it wont be too long till they get more in, when i clicked buy it said there was plenty left in stock so i cant be that far down the queue.
