And we have a rough estimate of the xbox performance which has 52CUs and 1800mhz using the same architecture. Roughly 2080/2080s?
We could add 10-15% for a 60CU part and another 20% for 2200mhz clock speeds. Bit of IPC improvements on top. At that point it's gotta be in range of a 3080.
Both me and humbug have posted speculative napkin maths to break down what AMD might need to do to compete with Ampere. Check this thread :)

So with everything that happened yesterday and today - will the 28th October launch be any different? AMD needs to come out on that day with plentiful stock otherwise the same thing will happen.
Unless they do what Facebook did with the Quest and immediately open up for pre-orders only with a pre planning shipping date.

We know from Facebook leaks that stock is already sitting in retailers warehouses waiting for distribution on 13th October. Can AMD do the same otherwise hardly anyone will get cards before xmas.

Did you buy or try to buy one @danlightbulb ?

No I was thinking about it but as soon as the website went down at 2pm and I saw that the Nvidia site wasn't updating, I gave up on it. Watched with interest for a couple of hours then had to go out. By the time I came home the forums had been taken offline.

Plus I'd already pre-ordered the quest 2 the day before.

However I am more interested in getting an AMD card at this stage, but only on the basis that they might have some stock actually available. Based on yesterday, not so sure.

The performance difference between the 40 CU 5700 XT and 36 CU 5700 is 13%. If we assume a 5700 clocked at the same clocks as the XT, with the same TMUs too performs approx. 10% less well, we could see performance improvements like this for RDNA 2:

CU count on the left, performance vs the 5700 XT on the right:

44 110%
48 120%
52 130%
56 140%
60 150%
64 160%

Admittedly, the numbers are quite optimistic. Also, they assume significant improvements in power effiency and ignore potential IPC improvements made from the last gen.

The other thing you realise comparing these GPUs is that the increases in core clock and CU count increase the TDP by a rather large 45w from the 5700 to 5700 XT. They couldnt of gone much higher than 40 CUs with RDNA gen 1.

60 CU isn't enough for a halo product, I think that would come in shy of a 3080 too

Why isn't it? I don't care if it has 1 CU if it is faster than the competition. What does the number matter?

I understand your expectation of that number not being enough, but you have no idea what they have changed or done with the CUs. 60 might be enough, it might not be enough I have no idea but if it turns out 60 is enough then I couldn't care less that it's 'only' 60.

Fake product scarcity gives people the fear of missing out. If amd did the same I wouldn't be surprised.

Even everyone moaning about Nvidia is doing them a favour. No such thing as bad publicity and all that!

Did she say this and in what context? :)
