Ampere... what a disastrous launch!

It was obviously a paper launch ...

The best thing Nvidia could’ve done...

... would have been to not 'launch' until they had decent stock in the retail chain. Why not wait another month and have a launch that actually results in folk getting their hands on product.

Yes - hence I said they could've held off at least 2 weeks minimum from pre-order to sale.

Yeah I got my PS5 and 3080 at RRP too - happy days mate.

Wouldn't be that happy until you actually receive it, having a pre-order on the system regardless of the cost doesn't mean you got a card, just a place in a queue but fully paid for.

I know. But I'm fairly content I'll get it in the next few weeks at most. Got my order quite early in for the Eagle, and stock has been coming in for those.

And I don't really buy the 'unprecedented demand' crap coming from NVIDIA either, as I think they were well aware the demand would be high.

Sure they might have known demand was high but completely unrelated websites thought they were being DDOS'd by the amount of traffic, etc. several sites were taken offline, other sites were seeing traffic levels above Black Friday so I can believe the sheer volume was much much higher than expected - I've never seen that on GPU launches before - the odd website impacted but not the level that happened here.

There is/was no stock, end of story. The launch was 'fake news' having spoken with several suppliers they all basically said no stock in September to speak of 4+ weeks before any proper number are around and 3+ months to clear back orders if they remain at the level they are now.

I can't say how much but there definitely was stock moving on the day - the supplier I spoke to due to getting staff discount however was unable to get their name on anything before the 28th of October (doesn't mean they wouldn't get stock earlier and/or not a guarantee they'd get stock on that date either).

There were 'some' cards, the fact that the number is being NDA'd tells you how may there was, even the distribution places won't answer the question. Farce is far too polite for all the poor sods who actually want a card for playing games. I have two/three PNY cards on order that have been pushed out to November, I need another three on top of that, I am just glad that the client is understanding about how much NVIDIA screwed the pooch on this one. I've told them to not expect any finished dev work until the end of the year at the earliest due to these delays.

Thing that annoys me more is the price creep - some of the 3070s are almost up to the "launch" 3080 price and the 3080s all creeping up - I'm still undecided on what I'm going for as I only play at 1440p and mostly getting one because I do some Quake 2 RTX development stuff - if I could have got a 3080 on the day with staff discount I'd have pulled the trigger now I'm sitting back undecided if I'm even going to buy at all - the launch prices are actually fairly reasonable for the hardware but not much more and I'm blowed if I'm spending more than £450 (or £470 FE) on a 3070.

I'm waiting until the dust settles. No way I'm paying over the odds. I'll probably get a 3070, but not at any more than £469.

It really has been a total cluster**** of a launch. But then I pretty much expected it.

It now gives AMD a huge opportunity, if they can offer a comparable product, at a decent price and assuming they have ample stock well all those disgruntled people will prob just but that instead. Far worse launch than Turing ever was, you couldn't make it up, and will likely be the same for the 3090 and 3070 especially now the scalpers have seen the demand.

Its a bit lol Nvidia weren't expecting major demand, even if you take gaming out of the equation they were releasing a card with higher mining performance than a 2080ti at less than half the price lol

I got my 3080 last Friday (not from here) and can tell you it deserves to sell out.The card itself is a monster and relatively speaking pretty great value too. But yes woeful numbers means it will be months before most people who want one will get one. Global demand looks mega.

It was a total mess but the upshot of it is im waiting to see what AMD do. To be honest im probably going to wait till next year anyway, retailers gouging the hell out of customers 'because reasons' leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I don't get all the rush. There isn't a next gen game out until November. Don't give paper launches time of day, just wait a month maybe slightly longer and order then along with that next gen game that will make use of the new hardware?

On a personal note I've been spending a lot of time playing around with Quake 2 RTX (making custom maps and some coding) - it is pretty painful at like 7-10 FPS at 1440p on my 1070 - I have to go back to like 800x600 to get playable FPS heh. So I'd have preferred to get something sooner but I'm not in a tearing rush as it is the only reason I have to even buy Ampere at the moment - the games I currently play do fine on my 1070.

If you have a >60Hz display then current GPUs can have trouble keeping up in current and even older games.
