Ok so I picked up my Palit 3080 at 5pm from OcUK HQ and got home around 6. Spend a couple of hours installing my new 850 PSU and then put the 3080 in, took the opportunity to clean my wiring up and re-order everything so I got finished up about 8:30pm.

First thing I did was run all the 3D Mark tests, I’m blown away by how my 1070 was a slideshow and this is so ridiculously smooth. I’ve then bought/installed Metro and Control to play around and they are both awesome, just as you’d expect.

However, and this is something I feel like you’re all going to experience, once you’ve done all that it really is just a GPU and at the end of the day I’m about to go back and play Elite Dangerous and probably some Doom. Both of those games were already getting amazing FPS on my 1070 and it feels like I’m back to normal now the excitement is over of installing everything and playing around.

I’m saying all this as I was just as excited as you guys, when I picked the card up my hands were actually shaking with excitement - my wife couldn’t believe how much of a nerd I was being! So I was just as excited as the most enthusiastic of you guys. But I’d encourage you to relax a bit, I know we’re all excited for the likes of Cyber Punk and so on, but a new 3080 really won’t change much in regards to your gaming habits once you’re past the first couple of hours of messing around.

If someone else wrote this sort of message while I was still waiting for my 3080 I don’t think it would have made me calm down, it was getting to the stage where I was considering buying one on all our favourite auction website and cancelling my order. I’m so, so glad I didn’t as I’d have felt a bit silly once the adrenaline burned off.

I’m coming from a 1070 and the 3080 do I’m not saying it’s not an awesome upgrade is definitely worth the wait, if you’re coming from the older 10XX range you’re going to see a massive improvement and your e-peen with your gaming circle will be inflated a bit. But even if this post just helps one of you take a breath and realise a big part of all this is being wrapped up in the hype and you question what the new 3080 will change in how you’re playing games you’ll realise it’s not a great deal and it may help you relax a bit.

Mate, I appreciate the angle you're coming from with the rationalisation about it just being a GPU. However, the same excitement you felt buying it and taking it home and looking at the box and installing it etc, is the same joy other people want to experience, even if it means playing the same games but with higher FPS. Truth is, we all know it's just a GPU, and that's ok. But as PC enthusiasts, we enjoy tinkering with the newest tech, and using it for more than just gaming. I use my 2070 for Machine learning and Deep learning, as well as gaming. I get where you're coming from though. The fracas has ended and you've sat down and thought to yourself, 'the hell was all that about?', now that you have a minute to sit and think.

Depending on stock, some people might not even have a card until Xmas, which is pretty gutting. Already having it provides you the luxury to be rational. We don't have that luxury right now. We WANT BLOOD.

So you wouldn't really have had a GPU bottleneck in the first place.

But yeah, your point is well taken ... it's only some extra frames, not a life-changing experience and it's definitely not worth getting upset over. :)

I mean I don’t want to down play it too much, I’m noticing an enormous difference and many new games couldn’t be run at even high. So the upgrade is very much noticeable.

But since Thursday I’ve been refreshing this post, another forum post on OcUK, checking my queue position a couple of times per day as well as checking Gibbo’s posts a few times per day and then also as checking the Nvidia on Reddit in my downtime. Now I know that’s extreme, but I also suspect I’m not the only one acting like that - the hype is just insane and it’s so easy to get wrapped up in it.

So my post is less of a “I’m not seeing a difference” sort of thing and more just trying to say at the end of the day we’ll all go back to playing the main games you’re already playing right now and sure they will look better but it’s not worth getting as crazy obsessed as I was.

I know this won’t help everyone as I don’t think any post by anyone would have helped me chill out, but it may help one or two who are as obsessed as I was and it was getting to the point I was about to do something stupid.

For example as well as finding an auction to buy I was seriously on the fence to buy an EVGA 2080 Super, sign up to the upgrade program and then get a 3080 when more stock was available. I’m so pleased I didn’t do that now I’m sat here a few hours after getting it all set up and installed!

I probably can’t post many replies after this, I seem to have a 15 posts per day limit here and I’ve posted a few times today :(

Oooh - anyone fancying a punt on the zotac amp cards or the gigabyte vision, unless i'm mistaken they have been added today/tonight?

I've taken a punt on the vision just because I've got a black+white build and it'll look gorgeous. If it'll be a long wait I'll cancel, not too fussed - happy with my RTX 2080 which I bought for Cyberpunk's original April release!

I know mate and as I said, my own post wouldn’t have helped me be any more rational! I didn’t think I was getting it today, it came in as a complete surprise at 3pm and I cancelled all my meetings and went to get it so I definitely know where you’re coming from.

My post definitely wasn’t a “You guys need to chill out, it’s only a GPU” sort of thing but more of a “Take a breath” sort of thing as I was definitely on the verge of acting completely irrationally.

Nice reply anyway and I’m hoping all you get your cards soon too :)

Oh yes for sure, ive got a cracking 1080ti atm which seems to be doing very well and overclocks like a champ (palit), knowing my ordering of the FTW was a bad idea now, the idea of not having RTX for the gaming ive been stalking for 3 years will properly upset me haha. I even bought a 10900k, 32gb ram, z490 and another SSD especially for this card. i don't care about stock cooler as its being blocked anyway so if a *reasonable* scalper price comes up will probably buy tbh.

I think I will be satisfied with the upgrade from my 3400G :)
