Maybe so but put into into context the storage is half cost of series X and pretty much 90% cost of Series S

That's ridiculous, what does rest of consol cost sod all to make?

It just seems way over the top.

Maybe the consoles are subsidised to get people.into the ecosystem

You wouldn't necessarily do the same for accessories

The consoles are probably sold at cost or at a small loss tbh.

If you take the RRP of the S of £250, which includes a control at £55, and a 512GB SSD at say £95 if it were an accessory, that leaves £100 for the rest of the console. No way it costs that little to make. The accessories is where they make the real money. Controllers, SSD expansion, battery packs etc. And the games, obviously. Oh and the hundreds of thousands of all access subs. Given that the parts in the series X and S are fairly similar, I wouldn't be surprised if the S is sold way below cost knowing that they'll make the money back on everything else.

Would you need the chargeable battery pack as well as the stand? The stand looks great.

I'm a bit confused on that side of things. It looks like the stand uses a similar system to the Venom stand I've got for Xbox One; contacts on the battery pack are pressed against contacts on the stand. But the official battery packs don't seem to have these contacts?...

If it comes with a battery, £39.99 isn't horrendous, I guess. Still expensive. But it at least makes a bit more sense.

Agreed, you’d think it would come with a compatible battery and if it does the price over the cheaper battery pack isn’t too bad.

Edit: yup, just looked at the third picture that shows the battery that seems to come with it. Hmm.

Edit 2: ordered. Have cancelled the standard play kit.

Seems like both Sony and Microsoft are banking on scale dropping the price of SSDs rapidly. The MS drive is a £150-£180 SSD in an enclosure for £220. The PS5's SSD is faster than Samsung's new 860 Evo 1TB (which is $229 for the bare drive).

Its because they are gen 4 NVME drives. They aren't exactly bog standard ssd drives. Price was expected to be high, but 220 quid is higher than I even thought.
