Nvidia to AMD

I might jump back across to AMD. But I’ve decided I’ll wait for next year when I don’t have to keep checking several sites for scraps of stock. I can wait.

Hmm IF I was to build NEW system id go with BIG NAVI.
But Since on 3900x with x470 motherboard cant use new big navi features and dont have PCIE4 cause AMD REMOVED IT then sticking with 3080.

I find it sort of interesting that there's a bit of a turn around in that regard.

AMD is in a unique position when it comes to their new memory technology, while Intel is looking at launching their own GPU's I don't think anyone expects them to be any good at launch (Whenever/if that happens) and Nvidia simply doesn't have a comparable product in terms of CPU's.

I see it as the following:

1. Intel and Nvidia are forced to adopt some sort of open source technology similar to what AMD is doing.
2. They work together to do something similar in opposition to AMD.
3. They ignore it.

Lets face it, the number 2 option is never going to happen and number 3 would be a bit awful for everyone. It's a situation where AMD has two tech superpowers on the back foot to the point where they need to work with them rather than against them.

Interesting times.

you are correct, it is looking very interesting going forward. We have the whole NVidia/arm thing, intel will hit back at some point and AMD are in a good position. I really like it:D

Absolutely!

Tech hasn't been this exciting for a long, long time imo.

Really looking forward to what is to come and it's a joy watching a relatively tiny company like AMD slap around two giants of the industry such as Intel and more-so Nivdia.

It's excellent entertainment, it really is.

Considering the comical prices of Nvidia's 3000 series, quite likely but waiting on benchmarks yet to confirm. Currently have a 1070.

So how many have you decided you will go over to AMD when they come out

With a 2080 Ti, I'm in no rush. There's no stock of Nvidia cards and I expect demand for the AMD cards to be huge. Plus I expect Nvidia to riposte, not least by bringing in a competitor to the 6900 - the easiest way would be to reduce the price of the 3090 to match. I would not be surprised if Nvidia bring Hopper forward to next year.

Ill pre-order a 6800xt the 2nd its on OCUK I think, I have 14 days to return it should it be sent out before the reviews drop.

As I have an Asus XG27UQ-27 monitor i feel almost obliged to upgrade my 1080ti.

Though im craving a 5000 ryzen to go with it, it feels like such a waste of time when i can wait a year and upgrade from a Ryzen 1700 to DDR5 compatably CPU.

The 3090 is only ~15% faster than the 3080, and to match the 3090 AMD had SAM/RAGE turned on, where the extra 10% will come from idk...

Really, so it's £1k outlay to match the 3080 unless I want to lay out another £550 for a 5900x to get an extra 5% and then invalidate the warranty for another 5%?

Has this AMD release been over hyped?

I'll definitely be sticking with nvidia, i'm position 15 in the que for a tuf 3090 OC and nothing will get me to give that up. Really enjoying all this competition though and wish all you guys enjoy your new cards whatever you go for.

Agreed, competition is good for us all, glad AMD are now competing at the high end.

Currently on a 1080ti and have the upgrade itch, tried to get a 3080 but failed as many did, I don't want to wait for months in a queue whilst all the time out of pocket, hope AMD can deliver on this. 6800xt will do the job at 3440 X 1440 for a good while for me.

Very true, its been a while since whichever of the duopoly was a decent card, so enjoy which one does the job for your own needs.

It seems with the 6800XT they didn't use SAM/RAGE but the $50 you save is traded for ~33% RT performance. For a £1k 6900XT you're basically getting a 3080Ti, for £1k+550 you get a 16GB 3090.

I expect Nvidia to release a 12GB 3080Ti relatively soon, there has been some news elsewhere that it's in the works after the 20GB cancellation.

I don't think you can go wrong with either option.
At the moment Nvidia is imo the safer bet due to DLSS and better RT performance but until we have solid benchmarks it's all just a guess.

At the end of the day, 2 months ago you needed to pay £1000+ for the performance that both camps are now offering for half that price. It's a win either way :)

I have a Gsync monitor so should stick with nvidia but they have nothing in stock and doesn't look like availability will be normal until the new year at least, I'm not happy going less than my existing 11gb of Vram so I'm not really interested in the standard 3080. So that leaves AMD but as I said I have a gsync monitor. Of course its entirely feasible that everyone will be playing catch-one-if-you-can with those as well in which case the sensible option would be wait until next year to see if that brings a refresh to Nvidia's lineup with more vram, which it likely will. However I don't think I can wait that long I've got the upgrade itch bad at the moment. On the other hand I may not have a choice if theres nothing available.

Basically there are no good options currently. But if I had a freesync monitor I'd go back to AMD again for sure I've no use for RTX currently the chip's been sitting idle since I bought it.

I have a high refresh rate Gsync monitor, I know I won't get the Gsync feature with the new AMD cards but I don't imagine it will make much difference as this range of cards nowadays are so powerful or will it and I am best getting another Nvidia GPU

Just disable Gsync in Nvidia Control Panel and you'll see what it's like.
