Is the future really electric

Didn't we have this thread already? And decided that it was OK to run a cable across the pavement as long as it was covered and that really most folks only needed to charge once per week at most and that the situation was just getting better on an almost daily basis.

wow
You can charge your electric car with free electricity if you have access to such.

And:
Electric cars are already cheaper to own and run, says study
Petrol and diesel vehicles cost more over four years in UK and four other European nations

I am not sure if thats good or bad,, if its only -5% now, what happens when they increase taxation levels to same as petrol? 5% Vat to 60% electric tax for cars?

Then you’ll pay. They do this over and over. Buy a diesel they said. Tax breaks for diesels. Now it’s buy an EV. Tax breaks for EVs. When we’ve all got an EV it’ll be buy a fuel-cell car - tax breaks for fuel cells. And on and on.

And all that despite the fact that petrol and diesel have enormous taxes on the fuel and EVs do not

Just goes to show how without the market distortion of taxation, internal combustion engines are massively cheaper to run.

Residual values and cheaper products might start changing the shape of that graphic pretty fast! And that just the personal buyers part of the market.

Plus 10 years is ages to get all this sorted, it's twice as long as Brexit and look how straightforward that was :D

Birmingham City Council have a project to replace every 'traditional' street light with led streets lights.

It started in 2010 and is expected to be finished by 2035.

Yes, and that is constrained by budget and they’ll try to only replace broken lights with new ones. So if they wanted to, they could change them much faster.

Are we using the magic money tree to provide limitless funds for EV then?

Does anyone remember a deadline Boris set that he didn't later change?

Somewhat yes
Think its £1.3B to sort of network infrastructure and charging which will hopefully go someway to reducing the range anxiety and "how will I charge my car" thoughts

Also investment in power etc

I am sure it will be pushed back to some extent, but a sensible conversation now on Hybrid could be really useful

But we'll look super good at climate conferences though!

Climate change is happening and already causes billions if not trillions of losses.

Normal places went to LED many years ago

Hybrid is not good - only 100% electric.

If you own a house, there is no problem for you because you can use your own electricity installations.
If you live in an apartment building, just park in front of your window and use a longer cable..

All sorted :D

But we'll look super good at climate conferences though!

It'll do wonders for social mobility.

Maybe we'll need to rebuild the factories and docks that the terrace houses were originally built to serve? Then at least they'll be able to get to work.

I agree hybrid isnt perfect, but you only have to look at reactions from people like Fox and Amiga to see there is going to have to be a transition

With the pure petrol and diesel ban being brought forwards there is a sensible window for those who do need something in between

Would be good if we could setup initial vehicle taxation to take into account total lifetime emissions and charge based on that, would certainly help to transition the switch when hybrid are more expensive.

People will change it just takes momentum

I don't think "ban" is the right description for stopping the sales of new ICE vehicles and the requirement to buy alternative fuels vehicles.

Maybe the government should try another approach - don't stop the sales of ICE but just increase the taxes so much that it would be virtually impossible for anyone to purchase such and everyone will naturally look for cheaper and greener alternatives.
