I bought an RTX 3080 for 1080p gaming!

Good decision! You'll get excellent performance in any game (All ultra 60fps+) for the next year or two. MSFS 2020 should also look amazing and play at very decent fps.
You can NEVER have too much GPU power despite what some people believe and the argument that a 3080 should only be used at 1440 or 4K simply doesn't hold water as a 3080 can't maintain 60fps in MSFS2020, Watch Dogs:Legion, AC:Valhalla, RDR2 all ultra at 4K and almost certainly will be found lacking in some AAA games going forward at 4K.

A 3080 can barely hold 4K/60 in some 2017 titles I like to play! And as for those mentioning consoles and 4K.........please stop this nonsense

I'm getting fps that are over 90fps @ 1080P most of the time on my 5700XT but without Freesync I have to keep vsync on to get a smooth experience. I have ordered a 144Hz 1440P monitor now to get the higher resolution benefit and smoothness without vsync. A 3080 would be way overkill if you are still using a 1080P 60Hz.I will be upgrading to a 6800XT eventually if I can't maintain over 60fps @ 1440P in the games I play.

A 5700xt wouldn't get a sustained 60fps with ultra settings on 1080p with Watchdogs Legion:

The 3070 can do so (with an average of 93fps and a 99th Percentile of 75fps) but I wouldn't say that's a huge amount over 60fps. Games in a year or two will surely be more demanding. Considering the 3080 is running the game about 15% faster (107fps average) shows that the 3070 was the bottlenecking the result. But I suspect the CPU was also adding some limitations, as the 3080 is well over 15% more powerful than the 3070. I would think that as games make the GPU work harder (and CPU bottleneck reduces) that the difference between the 3080 and 3070 will increase at 1080p.

Ok some screenshots from FS2020 yes at 60 frame rate but smooth even at 20, it will improve as the sim is in effect being beta tested still and is running direct 11

Screenshots from the New flight sim on a I7 6800K, 32GB memory, 1TB Samsung 970 pro plus M.2 drive. ASUS X99-11a motherboard and a Asus Tuf OC RTX3080 the shots with the small frame rate box are at 4K settings on a 1080P TV using NVIDIA's software upscale, the larger boxes with the faster speeds are at 1080P are at the TV's native output. Either way they both are running really smoothly without any noticeably stuttering i can detect. everything is wound up to max IE ULTRA inc traffic

Interesting video on this subject:

I am considering swapping my centre 1080p 24 inch screen with a high refresh rate one. Dont really want to get a different resolution or size monitor as it will not look as good together with the other screens

I too am into the ol' flight Sims. So much so, I've built a simpit out of Tubeclamp, steel piping and a car seat. While I'm *still* waiting for the 3080, I can't recommend the Alienware (I know, don't hate me) AW3420DW monitor enough. It's just... something else. Combined with TrackIR, it's insanely good. Doing anything with CAD/design on it is glorious too, so much desktop real estate :D

Ultrawides look fantastic for games that support the resolution. What do they do if, say, you play a game that only supports up to 1080p. Does it stretch the image or place it in the center unstretched (borders all around) or in centre to fit (borders on left and right only)

You will like it when you get it Fluke, I have uploaded more pictures to that link above including what my MS2020 game is set at. Basically at full everything ie ultra or the highest settings for whatever it is, I’m hitting 58- 60 frames at altitude and about 30 low level after I updated all the drivers yesterday. That’s card and pc.
