Is the 3090 a 'waste' for gaming?

Bigger is better :p;)
I'm wondering how many of us with 3090's would have been happy with the 3080/6800xt had they been availablein numbers at time of purchase

I had the 3800 preordered at launch/crash and when I saw the thread on forum I cancelled.
Tried for the 6800xt...and yeah... here we are

Yep, its something we were not predicting nor could escape. I can wait, generally dont buy GPU's on release cycles, but after weighing up issues with the supply chain, gouging by retailers and scalpers intercepting I could see it being well into 2021 before I had a 'normal' chance which would be coming to half a year after when they should have been available.

Depends how much of a rush you are in for a GPU i suppose but as we are so close to the 6900xt launch i would just wait to see what they have to offer and make a purchasing decision then , things like is raytracing and dlss 2.0 of interest to you ? if so then would look at the 3090 range if not then go AMD by all means :) The other situation is stock and if you are actually able to get your hands on one as I'm pretty sure AMD themselves said the 6900XT will be in short supply and we currently know the 6800xt is non existent at the sec and if you do manage to get one will probably not be a msrp  The 3080ti IF ever released will probably face the same issues and be unavailable for months where as you can sort of pick up a 3090 now if needed :)

Been waiting since the September launch already. Not been too bad as I have a half decent 2080Ti anyway but the 4K performance has always been just or not quite enough.

Hoping either a 6900XT or 3090FE will fix that for the time being.

Saying that, recently got a PS5 and the new Horizon game looks better than anything I’ve ever seen before on any platform. Punching well above it’s weight on that title, that’s for sure.

If you don’t know what I mean, have a quick Google. It genuinely made my jaw drop at some of the PS5 screen shots.

Ah in that case just bide your time and wait to see what happens with the 6900xt launch as a 2080ti is still a very very good card and will see you through till something better comes along :D One thing i will say is compared to the 2080ti you WILL NOT be disappointed in the uplift in performance at 4k , if i remember rightly figures around the 40 to 50% were being quoted compared to a 3090 it was certainly a nice and hugely noticeable jump up compared to the 1080ti i was originally running

Yeah I've got a PS5 as well and although I've only got 1 game on it currently which is Demon Souls i will agree and say it looks absolutely stunning with the graphic on offer and a massive jump compared to the PS4 and I've not seen much on PC that comes close currently but expect that to change now developers can stretch their legs a bit more ... exciting time ahead :D

Same as me, tried for 3080, no dice, tried for 6800XT...not a chance. So here we are with a 3090 FE, although apparently i missed DPD this morning :o so i have to wait until tomorrow to witness the fitness. This wasn't the route i wanted to take and the price is a tough pill to swallow but i'm absolutely bored of waiting for stock, smashing F5, paying for things to then be refunded because of no stock etc. This card should last me a good 5 years with he benefit of DLSS, plus the FE cooler is far far more appealing to me than any AIB offering!

6900XT would have been nice but lets be honest its going to be so rare it might aswell be a myth. I'd have probably waited next year for a 3080 but im rocking a R9 290 a mate leant me and you have to set settings so low everything looks like a potatoe :(

Totally agree. I would have been a 6800XT man only difference but when I seen the prices being more than nvidia with the shortage of supply it was game over on my preference. At least the FE are appearing regularly to get a chance and the extra expensive 3090 means you have chance to get it in your basket and go nuts. Going to enjoy it as iits been a while since I really committed to an nvidia card so same with a 5 year job I shouldn't need to and hope it lasts as long as my 290X did with only side-grades appearing year after year.

These cards may have cost you guys a fair bit more dollar, but you'd not bought them if you couldn't afford them. I managed a 3080 but I'd have probably bought a 3090 once the 'I want one' grows to the 'just buy it' stage.

But a waste for gaming - nah, definitely not, waste of extra money yes, but there's nothing any consumer can do about that if you want it now. You'll probably not need anything else until you go 8k, really need to run a poorly optimized game or, games suddenly start requiring much more GPU horsepower, but games development doesnt often go like that. They are too expensive - but they are there for those that can and want to afford them. And for folk that use GPU's for work and buy them through work - no brainer.
