Yas Island
When was the track built?
In 2006, plans were announced to develop Yas Island, located just to the east of Abu Dhabi, into a new tourist destination, with a major part of the plans centring around a 5.5km race track. The diggers rolled into what would become the Yas Marina Circuit in May 2007, with the project completed by October 2009.

When was its first Grand Prix?
In 2009. The track debuted as that year’s Formula 1 season finale, with Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel winning from team mate Mark Webber and the already-crowned 2009 champion Jenson Button. Vettel would go on to secure his first title in Abu Dhabi a year later, amid much crying.

What’s the circuit like?
The Hermann Tilke-designed track is dominated by its 1.2km straight between Turns 7 and 8 – which, with slow-speed corners marking its beginning and end, makes it a honeypot for overtaking moves. Other highlights include the tricky run through Turns 15 and 16 into 17, which forces the drivers to brake hard with bags of lateral load still on the car.

Last race weekend of what's been a crazy year, both on and off track. Very glad we got to see this many races and at many great circuits.

Will George get another go, or will Lewis make it back in time?

Another year almost over and another year to thank @Shimmy for making all these threads!

I wouldn't wish Hamilton (or another driver) to be ill but I'd like to see George have another shot where Merc don't screw it up. Though it seems the aim is for Hamilton to race so it will solely come down the results of his covid test.

Noticed Hamilton hasn't said anything about his stand-in (publically anyway). I thought there would have been a little something as he's talked up Russell before.

Odd season, some unlikely race winners and 13 different drivers on the podium. 2021 might still have a disruped calendar yet however I'm not looking forward to more of the same status quo next year.

Odd that we still don't know if Hamilton is back or not this weekend; seems a little unfair on the other stand ins (Russell and Aitken) that its Thursday and they don't know what car they'll be in this weekend

I suspect it is all contractuals and he'll do anything he can to get back in the car, especially after Russells performance last weekend and with his impending contract talks.

i was thinking this just yesterday, i haven't heard anything regarding Lewis contacting George before or after last weekend

There doesn't seem to be another alternative here? While Hamilton still has a chance to recover and return to his seat they can hardly call it.

Today is the last chance for Lewis to return some negative Covid tests so we'll find out later today,
i can only assume the he hasn't tested negative yet

Could get one on saturday monring couldn't he in theory. only an hour flight to Abu Dhabi so could be a late announcement, but would be foolish of Merc to chuck someone in with no practise sessions even of Hamiltons level.

After re-reading the BBC article on it, Merc said the latest they could get him in the car is for practice 3 at 2pm Saturday afternoon local time (10am GMT)

I assume this has happened before but I can't actually remember one incidence of the top of my head is it actually allowed to drive for 2 teams in one weekend?

So If Russell drove in P1 and P2 on Friday for Merc then Hamilton got better and arrived for Saturday what would then happen to Russell? Can he go back to Williams or not?

I don't see any reason why not. It's only practice. If it was after qualifying then obviously you wouldn't be allowed to, but after FP1 or FP2 (or FP3 for that matter) then I don't see why not.

If it is permitted then whether Mercedes would want to do that might be another matter. This weekend they might prefer Vandoorne so they can swap in Hamilton easily enough if he is declared fit to drive.
