AN UNMITIGATED DISASTER

Computer science was useless at my school too in terms of teaching any programming, I can remember being taught more about computer history and Babbage's difference engine than anything practical on the networked BBC Micros we had.

One whizzkid programmed a car image with a moving headlight because he already knew how to. The rest of us mostly sent primitive but hilarious synthesised speech messages to each other that you could send to a classmate's PC and it would speak it out loud on their computer. Most of the best known swear words would come out fairly well, if you got the phonetics right, so you can imagine it was quite a distraction.

Looking back the CS teacher was useless, I doubt he knew anything about programming. A really wasted opportunity to teach kids how to program in the late 80s.
Our school didn't even teach programming. I remember there were only like two computers in the whole place :p

The only BBC Micro was in the home-ec classroom, of all places! Yeah, I have no idea either :p

The school in question no longer exists - it's a housing estate now. And - just like that - I feel old :(

How is the 3070 faring up Rroffster?

Doing what I need of it.

Shame Cyberpunk is a bit of a let down - I'm just playing it at 1440p on my normal gaming monitor - though I was somewhat tempted to get a good enough GPU to play it on my 4K monitor (plus HDR is kind of broken in the game anyhow and doesn't really make good use of my 4K monitor).

Can DLSS not help it on the 4k?

Hmm... DLSD. An upgrade? Or a hallucinogenic Nvidia are giving out with their cards? "Only 10GB memory, but check out these '4k' cellophane flowers of yellow and green"

Yes, its the new day era of mobile phones or devices that have apps that just work - I get it. When you grew up in the early eighties then nineties on tech where you would be on the road to nowhere - you adapted fast, it may have been the hard way but your set for life. Most youngsters I encounter these days come across the first obstacle and leave it as they have no capacity to think for themselves. :)

1000000000000000000% correct. (first hand experience)

It's got nothing to do with 10GB ram if you look at 3090 performance with its 24gb ram and needing DLSS still.

A lot of people are in denial about the benefits DLSS brings, framerate going from under 20 to over 50 with a difference so small in image quality it's hard to see the difference.

At Secondary School (1986) the "IT Boffin" in my class had a BBC and the Computer Teacher (who looked like Clive Sinclair) was a bit of a BBC snob when I took my Computer O'Level we had to write a self learning computer program as the practical so I wrote it on my Commodore 64 (which the teacher said was a toy) and I wrote OXO that self taught itself so after a fair few games it won or drew everytime against the player. It also printed out every result on my CBM printer plotter (bit like a till roll). I cant remember what the Boffin did but he was bragging he would come first but I remember his program had a massive flaw in it and out of the class of 20 my OXO program came first and "Clive" as we used to call him had to admit mine written on CBM Basic was the best.

Love a bit of DLSS, was just a gag on the typo, clearly wasn't clear enough...

Ours always seemed to be taken over at lunchtimes by the programmer kids. I found out years later a lot of them ended up working for Rare Games so at least they were putting them to good use!

;)

I also have plenty of nephews, nieces and my own children so its not a poor observation. I have also got teaching qualifications and a few years of a wide audience group which amplifies the awareness and associated learning difficulties (which were nowhere near as identified back then).

As far as I can see,the forest hasn't had any at all yet. They only have one 3090 on pre order, set to arrive 25th dec. Just shows you how bad the situation is.

Man the world has gone nuts.

I have recently build a new PC but wasnt planning an getting a new GPU for a few months (running a 1070) and looking around, its not just 3080's out of stock, looking through OCUK's entire stock of GPU's, there are like a few 1050ti's, some 1030 low profile thingys, and thats it.

I mean, wtf?

I couldnt even buy a better graphics card then the one I have at the moment, at all, let alone buy one of the new releases.

I know it's mad, I have a Vega 56 that has been playing up for ages now (never been right) but I am stuck with it for now.

Yeah I'm glad I got my 5700 XT when I was furloughed, I've played many games with it, its a good card. I sold my 1070 around the same time, for the same money I bought it for (second hand). Who knows when this GPU stock issue will go on for, Nvidia quoting Feb/March, I'm guessing longer. I may have more chance of preordering a 3070 Ti if that's a thing in the future.

Ha yes buy a computer... non standard video port at the back. Buy a monitor... non standard video port at the back. Cue looking up schematics then ordering plugs, cables and a soldering iron from electronics parts supplies and "RGB... Sync... Gnd.. pins... connect 'em up... oh god it works!"

I actually did computing classes twice in college for two courses... neither were great the first teacher knew his stuff but was terrible about communicating it just blathered on about this that and the other and this BASIC program he was writing with the rest of us doing our best to follow. The second was even worse was basically incomprehensible the first course I actually passed because he did at least spark an interest I'd never even seen a computer or other piece of IT tech before but I bought my own and learnt how to write basic stuff on it. The second course I was the only person in class to pass becasue I'd taught myself basically. Tutor wasn't happy "What a WASTE of a year" he wrote in the class notes, that would be because of you mate.

It's not just OCUK.
I have been trying to source 1660 Supers and it's pretty much the same story - out of stock.
