I can’t see Perez being anywhere near Verstappen in quali. He’s never been the fastest driver on a Saturday, so he will need to do his talking in the race.So long as Perez is ~2-3 tenths behind Verstappen in qualifying by mid-season he should be OK. He's renowned for his race pace, but it's his consistency rather than his pace which is the key.
Given he'll probably have less than a day of pre-season testing he'll be lucky to get up to speed in the first half of the season, but if he's within ~30 seconds of Verstappen by the end of a race then on he'll be doing fine and exactly what Red Bull need - having someone who can be a fly in the ointment for Mercedes' strategists.
It was inevitable that Albon would get dropped. He went 4 straight races with very little points (1 I believe?) in a car capable of 3rd or 4th in the right conditions.
