Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Folks, whats the typical price most people are getting on renewals for 500mbit?
I havent checked in the last couple of years, but I guess Gigabit is still in big cities etc?

Just found this in their website:

If you're on a 30 day rolling contract or you decide to leave us after your minimum fixed term contract period, you'll just need to give us 30 days' notice.

Since kids doing home learning etc gonna get setup with Vodafone first then make the call to virgin. Dont want any down time. Loose out on 1 months fee with virgin but gets clawed back due to cheaper rate from voda in like 10 months.
Yeah was going to say I think its 30 days. I've never given notice as I've had a good enough deal done before getting to that point so wasn't fussed but for the best price you do need to give notice and hope they phone you back within the 30 days which is very likely. Worst case you have to phone them to cancel your cancel if you do actually want to stay with them.

ok just signed up with vodafone gigafast 500 meg job, engineer booking date is for 3rd march so thats a long wait.
virgins price hik email says i can cancel anytime before 12th feb so will ring up on like the 10th of feb and give them the 30 days notice. hopefully vodafone are on time with installs but with covid anything can happen. as long as lockdown is over and kids back at school i can easily make do with use phone as wifi hotspot or 30 day dongles.

Very nice, lucky to have another decent provider nearby. Although I only have 100mbit from VM (thinking of going 200 as the upload is useful for working from home), I've been waiting/hoping they would boost up for free like they do every other year but might just use this price increase to try and sort something out instead. My other option is FTTC which I worked out roughly being 40mbit.

Get a smarty 4g SIM to last you through the gap, £20pm no contract.

What prices are people paying for 350mb broadband only? Everytime I've rang Virgin in the past they've told me it I get a better deal by having phone and broadband. Thing is I don't even have a house phone plugged in so its pointless. Currently paying about £38 but due the £3.50 rise. Going to ring them soon and see what deal I can negotiate.

I was paying £32 a month for just the 350 until I upgraded to 500 in October. The retentions people only offered me a few quid off, I put in my 30 days notice and waited for the call. They're the ones with the really good deals. Also, if you get cold feet, you can always cancel your 30 days, so don't worry about getting disconnected.

yeah I've done all that in the past, just never left it so retentions give me a call because I don't have a phone plugged in even though I have a Virgin landline. I figured there's no point because they wont be able to call me.

Your 500 will be 600 sometime soon as some customers already got the free upgrade.

Any chance 350mb customers will be seeing an upgrade?

No clue as I am on 1Gb/s, all I know is the 500Mb/s was once only available with the TV package (think it was called Ultimate Oomph TV) but now available in standalone (I had it for 2-3weeks before 1Gb/s was available in my area) so the 500Mb/s Ultimate Oomph TV customers will get upgraded to 600Mb/s free which will not be available in standalone.

Whats upload on the 1gig?

I would hope they upgrade the Gig1 upload speed to 100Mbps eventually, that would put it in line with the likes of BT's 900/100 FTTP service.

Just cancelled mine today after spending 45 minutes on the phone, and trying to explain how stupid it is that they can offer you something cheaper if you take more services. I had a phone line with them in the first place to make it cost less (weird) but it never got used at all, and then the price went up twice in two months, once due to the contract ending then the £3.50 increase.

I can get the 1 Gig for the same price as a new customer as they wanted for 350Mbps, they have also made the contracts 18 months, and again tried explaining that being tied in for 18 months as speeds increase and prices drop is not something I was willing to do. In 12 months time (or less) I'll be able to get FTTP and that will be under £40 per month for a better quality and faster service.

I've opted to use my current equipment with my Unlimited data SIM and am in the process of installing a 4G/5G antenna on a pole outside (£85) and the SIM is only £18 per month, giving it a quick test over the last few hours I can achieve 140Mbps down and 70+ Mbps upstream, and the latency isn't important to me so that is a none issue. So I am going to save, and I have the BT line as the backup if needed. If it doesn't work out we can sign up as a new customer again in 6 months, getting things like £150 cashback from Quidco and other silly offers that apparently you only get if you are new.

That's really quite stingy, 5% of the download speed.

Download on Gig1 is currently DOCSIS3.1, upload is still using 3, when they finish rolling out 3.1 nationally they can look at using 3.1 up, which potentially offers symmetrical speed (I doubt we’ll see it), but for now the commercial focus is and always has been on download speeds and the last call suggested 10Gbit was getting some discussion, but the ongoing trial is much lower than that from memory.
