Second hand price insanity!

I'm giving up completely on PC gaming, the whole thing has gone too far. Selling my PC and getting a Series X, after 27 years of having a PC for gaming starting with games like Day Of the Tentacle, Wolfenstein, I even remember buying Doom in a box with a pile of floppy disks inside. Through the start of the internet, Wireplay, the birth of Steam, Half Life and all the glory years its all just an overpriced, overhyped, console ported, disappointing shadow of its former self.

I'm actually looking forward to just having a console and not messing about anymore and for the most part, being ripped off.

Before you do that, be sure you try some VR games. PC gaming has still a lot to offer, playing games like DCS using a VR set is an experience like no other. Agree in that it doesn't make sense anymore to own a PC just to play AAA games or console ported ones really... but unfortunately there are some games out there which can't be found on console.

I appreciate that, I've considered VR if not for HalfLife Alex but my setup is upstairs and I have two young kids so moving around in the evening when my only chance to game is when they are asleep kind of rules me out of VR

I'll be keeping a close on VR for consoles though and may bite if something comes out but in terms of PC gaming for now I am done, completely had enough of the costs, scalpers and miners its become a joke, literally in the sense that PC gamers who want to use components for their intended purposes are priced out or paying over the odds if they are lucky enough to get hold of parts and the people that are causing it think its funny.

I completely agree with you really. I normally play about 1-2 hours a day, when I can and if I am not completely knackered after work, so I have considered leaving the PC aside and moving to consoles quite a few times. The resons why I haven't done it so far, were the following:

-The best titles, by far, are found on PC. Of course, this is only an opinion, but I can only find "AAA Games" on consoles, and I normally have the feeling I have played these games many times already, all of them seem to be the very same game for me, just with slightly changes on graphics.
-If you want to get all you can from videogames in 2021, you need to play on PC. Seriously, playing games DCS World, or Assetto Corsa in VR can't be compared to playing on a console. There are other games out there, like HalfLife, Squadrons, Flight Simulator etc. In reality, I find playing the last Assasins Creed, or battlefield titles to name a couple, like if I was playing Tetris or Pacman back in 94 when I could have been playing Doom instead.
-Strategy Games are out of the question on console. I would still enjoy shooters though, even if I have to use the controller, as long as everyone plays with a controller as well, of course.
-Loads of hardware I couldn't use with the console... if you feel ripped off with PC gaming atm, just wait until you buy a SimRacing Wheel, a VR set, a controller or a Joystick, and you find that you won't be able to use any of them when you buy the next console...
-Games used to be cheaper on PC. Not anymore though, at least considering only AAA games, so yeah, if you want to play just these, I agree in that owning a PC doesn't make sense anymore really...

It's a pity, but the best days for playing on PC would be gone, if it wasn't for simulators and VR. But then, it is also true I feel things haven't changed that much on console either...

You can go a step further with Stadia and Geforce Now.

Yeah, but you would be limited to just a few titles though... DCS, which is the most interesting title to play in my opinion, would be out of the question. Flight simulator, also out I think... I'm not sure If I would invest in a VR headset for a PS5 really, there are not that many games worth of the investment, while you can play pretty much all the titles on PC. Also, how to know if you will be able to keep using the VR headset on the next PS?

Maybe I should try this lol
The ol Radeon X850XT PE with its 256mb of ram! oh it brings back memories.....

To be honest now is the time to sell that as the retro community is just waking up to the fact that it is possible to retro gaming on these old PCI-E cards, with this particular model being used as an example by a prominent YouTuber (and they look pretty cool imo)

Here is an example of "retro community" money:

All valid points but to do all of this you need to get hold of and pay for the hardware and that's the reason I'm out in the first place.

It's possible I'll end up doing another build in the future when all of this scalping and mining ends (If it does) I'll see how much I miss it but for now I actually intend to game a little less than I have been and just get an Xbox Series X with Gamepass

Its weird when you think about it, I am not the only one who is doing this and a lot of people are also saying they will keep their PC but not upgrade it and get a console to go along side it, Nvidia and AMD are making it so that parts required for gaming are unobtainable and pricing people out, I understand that GPUs are now a small part of their business but why though. Maybe its intentional for some reason. Whatever the reason is I've had enough and no amount of PC exclusives or VR headsets will change my mind at this point, step back and compare it now to as it was and you'll see why, its a complete mess and its not getting better anytime soon.

I completely agree really. I've been trying to upgrade my GPU since early december, and I decided to give up after just a few weeks of trying to buy one of the new Nvidia ones... it's just crazy. I really don't understand what they intend to do on the long term, unless they want us all to move to services like Geforce Now and stop selling hardware. The only hope I have left here for now, is that we see a crash in the cryptocurrency market so mining is not profitable anymore, and also that Intel finally decides to enter the market as a competitor again.

Anyway, good luck with the console, I think getting one is not a walk in the park either... looking on the bright side, game developers might have to start to optimizing their codes again rather than just relying on users buying more expensive hardware to run their games.

The only way cryptocurrency goes away is if governments declare it illegal to mine and use.

But good luck with that. The government can't even decide if gambling lootboxes... are gambling.

Then again, I don't think cryptocurrency mining is wholly to blame for the current situation.

now they've already done laptops, i look forward to crypto gremlins rootkitting consoles and realising they have capable GPUs with plenty of VRAM in them too.

given that those things are sold at a loss in order to make up for it through games and services, i imagine the console makers won't open their legs like the GPU manufacturers.

I was thinking about this the other day. Presumably the Series X and Ps5 have pretty capable mining gpu's in them (like 5700/3060ti equivalent hash rate potential probably).

Surely only a matter of time until someone works out how to mine on them.

I doubt it'll happen.

Take last gen. PS4 was cracked, but only at a software level and only on obsolete firmware. By the time exploits came out, they had long since been patched. If the same happened with PS5, that wouldn't be useful for miners unless they already owned a stockpile of launch consoles. Meanwhile, the Xbox One was never cracked.

For consoles to be useful for mining there would need to be a hardware level exploit, as on the Switch. There's absolutely nothing Nintendo can do about that one short of hurrying the release of Switch 2 and making sure they get the security right this time.

that's because it was undertaken by hobbyists. if whoever is sourcing thousands of GPUs going straight to farms all over china sees a big win in cracking modern consoles, they'll have more than a few kids on a discord working on it.

you could mine on the xbox one last gen but performance was awful as you'd expect. these laptops they're mining on likely have comparable hash-rates to modern console and probably cost twice as much.

Mining is only an annoying thing where it doesn't help with the current situation. It's a small blip in the grand scheme of issues. Supply just doesn't match the demand, hence the rules of the free market applies: scalpers, miners, price gouging, msrp hike up, etc

Personally, don't think it will change throughout of 2021. Why? Due to semiconductor companies not prioritising desktop GPU manufacturing, car chip manufacturing takes priority. AMD's deal with console Sony and Microsoft where they have to meet contractual volume demand. Also BTC might hit 6 figures by the end of this year which means loads of desktop GPUs will be snatched by miners or scalper bots. Where the latter will end up with miners anyway due to paying any price asked.

You can see where this is going, my expectations are managed and it will be hard to navigate through this but it's not impossible if you sign up to alerts and stuff.

Hope at least some of you are making some money in this economy either via stonks or crypto, unique times we are living in.

I did some scratting around in the attic and found an old Asus A8V-E socket 939 motherboard, an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU, case, PSU and pretty much everything else bar the memory, I think it needs PC3200 400MHz to a max of 4gb lol.

If it's cheap enough I might put it all together, interesting.

Just seen a 1080ti go for £605 on ebay. Its crazy.

Id sell my 1080 in a heartbeat if a replacement was easy to source!

That's £45 less than a 3080 FE RRP!!!

How I oddly wish I'd kept hold of my 1080ti 'for parts not working' I got £235 for. Coulda got MOOOOAAAAAARRRR!

Madness. Almost elated I paid £850 for my 3080 before Xmas.
