BMW - Oil Service Δ Inspection 1 Δ Inspection 2

The service menu in my E93 has entries for:
  • Brake fluid
  • Engine oil
  • Vehicle check
  • $ vehicle inspection
  • Front brake pads
  • Rear brake pads
So how will I or the garage know when a more thorough service is required? Am currently at 53k miles.

Also for oil it says 02/2021 in 10,000 miles - so which is it by date or mileage?
 
It is whichever is sooner - so, your service is due in 10,000 miles or February 2021 if you've not covered 10,000 miles by then.

The car needs an oil service every 2 years or 15-20k miles depending on usage - whichever occurs first. Every second oil service is a major service which also has replacement plugs/air filters etc.

The Vehicle Check element occurs roughly every 37500 miles and compromises of all the check elements that used to be part of the old Inspection services. It generally but not always coincides with the bigger oil service so is often bundled together to form the most complete service the car ever has.

The $ vehicle inspection is your statutory vehicle inspection - don't know how it works in Jersey but in the UK that is the MOT.

You can click on each individual element and it'll tell you when it is due. The only way to find out whether you are due the more comprehensive oil service is to check your service history to see what sort of oil service the previous one was.

Is it advised to get the microfilter done every minor service in that case? I end up having to service my F11 every 6 - 7 months due to my mileage. I can understand the oil needing changing but surely the microfilter doesn't need doing that often? It also bumps the "minor" service price up a decent amount.

The age doesn't really matter, if the car has done enough mileage in 6-7 months for the oil to need changing then the microfilters will have done the same hours. You could always by replacement MANN carbon filters from GSF or eurocar parts and fit them your self, they are about half the price and pretty easy to fit. That will save you probably about £80 off the main dealer service.

Is it just the filter that goes under the engine cover on the 20d engines?

This drives me up the wall. Every BMW dealer I have spoken to insists the microfilter is part of the oil service but as you've noted it seriously bumps the price up. BMW even offer an oil service without microfilter but I've never found a single dealer that agrees such a service is part of the schedule.
 
I always thought the use of the term "microfilter" was a bit misleading - it's just a cabin filter. I never understood why it was so expensive to have it changed either.

Also, inspection services check a lot of things, but there's an element of discretion as to whether certain items are changed or not. Again, I always felt this was misleading. This is true of other manufacturers as well, not just BMW.

I've used two different dealers to service our cars and just book it in for an oil service only, telling them to omit the microfilters. They always stamp or update iDrive as the service complete and I then put in the receipt for the microfilters I have purchased into the cars records. None have ever quibbled it.

Local dealers here won't update the service records for just an oil change, easy enough to do the iDrive service record yourself with the right software. I've been tempted to do it and keep the receipt for the microfilters and update the iDrive myself but you can normally get a good enough discount for me not to bother.
 
I don't see why not. The iDrive splits it down to what is done the same as the old service books used to. The dealers I use just don't tick the box for microfilter replacement, as the service is based on the oil change that still resets the CBS.
