Spec me a CCTV System

For that style of house I'd use an S-pole or just the pole mount to mount the camera to the gutter. Where the gutter is fixed just below the level of the windows is about the top-end of the optimum installation height (3.3m). Remember that the camera angle is between 105-degrees (2.7mm camera) and about 70-degrees (4mm camera lens). So to cover the whole back garden you'll need two cameras.

Can anyone recommend an NVR for Dahua cameras?

I have six cameras, two on the main house and four on an outbuilding. Mix of:

Dahua DH-IPC-HDW3549H-AS-PV WizSense TiOC Grey Outdoor HD PoE Turret IP Camera w/ 2.8mm Lens, 30m Full Colour, Audio & Alarm (5 MP)
Dahua DH-IPC-HFW3549T1-AS-PV WizSense TiOC Outdoor HD PoE Bullet IP Camera w/ 3.6mm Lens, 40m Full Colour, Audio & Alarm (5 MP)

There is a POE switch in each location for the cameras. At the moment I am only using the two on the house (on Synology's surveillance station). Given the cost of additional Synology licenses I think I am better getting an NVR and putting that in the outbuilding - I can wire the four cameras there direct in to the NVR and the two on the house can go through the switch.

I'm just installing a UHD system with 6 cameras, and 3.3m is certainly not the optimum height, which when I did a check is 2.4 - 2.6 meters, otherwise you risk simply catching the top of someone's head!

Oh really? Knock yourself out.

The folks who posted that are clearly experts. Look at how they installed a pendulum mounted dome camera horizontally so when it rains you’ll just see raindrops.

Mounting height is a function of the field of view of a camera. So there’s a balance to be struck between looking down (you see lots) and looking sideways (you see very little).

You also also have to consider the effect of illuminators on car number plates. Too horizontal and the illuminator whites-out the number plates, too high and you can’t read them.

And there is also the thorny issue of vandalism. You need them high enough up so someone can’t spray-paint them for when they come back later. 2.4-2.6m is easily reachable for most men. Maybe that’s why they recommend that height. It is very obvious from the myriad of pictures of their customers homes that none of their vehicles have ladder racks so they probably just stand on top of their De Walt T-Stak box to drill them in.

3.3m/10’ is currently the recommendation from Axis, Bosch, Dahua, Hanwha, Hikvision and Verkada.

But feel free to install yours lower. You are, after all, an amateur.

One problem that I see when the camera is mounted at low height is that it tends to point horizontally.

In some cases, in this configuration, you cannot avoid filming the public domain or you have to mask a significant part of the image.

Considering the Dahua TioC cameras equipped with a siren you may wat to use them as a deterrent more than an information gathering device.

As someone on the forum pointed out, even with a clear picture of a suspect, the police may choose to do nothing...

Mounting a TioC camera at a greater height reduces the ammount of usable information about the intruder BUT increases the visibility of the flash (especially at night).
So it acts more like a deterrent (more visible and harder to attack).

Speaking of TiOC cameras...

Does someone can recommend some "clever" ways to use the alarm input/output IOs. of the camera ?

Or the microphone/speaker ?

Hi All

It’s been a while since I bought my CCTV setup and it seems you need to have a trade account these days. I currently have these:-

HIKVISION DS-2CD2142FWD-I
HIKVISION DS-2CD2042WD-I
HIKVISION DS-7604NI-K1-4P

I’m looking to add another camera. The above cameras are great in the day but rubbish in the night. Please can someone recommend a camera which is better in the night? I don’t mind buying used.

You're looking at about £170+VAT plus an appropriate HDD - probably 4Tb minimum for 6 cameras.

In looking for a camera system and Costco have a Lorex 8 Channel 2TB NVR with 8 x 4K Ultra HD Smart Deterrence Security Cameras for £665. Is this a good price for this kit? Any other suggestions?

Thats a great price for 8 4K cameras and an NVR with all the cables. The 2Tb HDD won’t store the images for long if you’re recording at 4K but that’s probably the only downside.

And obviously if anything goes wrong Costco will replace the entire system for you if anything goes wrong but they won’t expect you to return the cables - those you can leave in, but you will need to pull the whole system if you need warranty replacement.

Were they always rubbish at night or have they become poor? If the latter then ask your previous supplier to replace them. Hikvision went through some duff IR illuminators that faded badly over 2-3 years and most of them are just about still in warranty cover. I’ve got some used cameras (training demo units) in MM if you want to have a look. If you set up an account at Broadband Buyer they have Hikvision and Dahua cameras as well as Axis but if you have to ask prices don’t think about Axis!

Always been poor. I’ll PM you now.

My father in law is after some wireless cameras following a lot of dog thefts in the area, he has mains power at the three camera locations and wants a local storage system as opposed to cloud based. My initial thoughts were a Reolink NVR and 3 reolink wireless cameras, is this the best option or are there any other suggestions?

Security dynamics has the 2MP Dahua wireless camera for £25+VAT and the 3 MP version for £35+VAT. Add a basic Dahua recorder for £150-ish and you’ve got a very cheap system.

Looking to do a self install CCTV system. Plan is 6 camera system with 2 at front of house, 1 in internal porch, 1 down side of house and 2 for rear garden.

For front of house cameras, are the 2 red dots the best placement? Would like the camera above the garage a bit higher but don’t think it would work with the layout of the house. Have put potential camera locations into software and it should give me the required coverage.

Spoken to a local dealer and they have recommended Hikvision 4MP DS-2CD2347G2-LU but they seem quite a bit larger than
Dahua DH-IPC-HDW3549H-AS-P and feedback on forums seem to slightly favour the Dahua option. Will there be much difference between the two options?

So I’m about to dive into kit from Reolink or Swann ect , should be a very easy install as I’m moving to a bungalow .

Is it really worth upgrading to a 4K system or is HD good enough ?

I have 1x 2MP (1080p) camera and 3x 5MP (1440p / 2K) and I would definitely buy the 5MP over the 2MP for sharpness. Apparently the 5MP are the sweet spot over 8MP (4K) at the moment in terms of night time performance.

Here is my patio (5MP) camera:

They’re basically the direct competitor products. Personally, I’m more inclined to go with the 5MP F1.0 Dahua over the 4MP F1.0 Hikvision but if your dealer is a Hikvision dealer then they’ll be leaning in that direction. I don’t think you’ll be unhappy with either option and the price should be roughly the same at about £110+VAT.

There shouldn’t be a massive cost difference these days between 2MP and 8MP but just be aware that with 8MP you’re going to be processing 4 times the data so you need a HDD at least 4 times the size.

Thanks for the advice - will go down the Dahua route as it just seems to have a slight edge
