I’m sorry but if a 3080 can’t play a game then a 3090 most definitely can’t! It’s not the next card up like the 2080ti was to the 2080, it’s fractionally better performance with a lot more vram. If 38 fps isn’t good enough then 42 fps won’t be either.
Far too much purchase justification going on in this thread, I get that people buy a 3090 because they can’t get hold of a 3080 and a tiny few actually need the extra vram but let’s be honest if there wasn’t a squeeze on the gpu market we would all be rocking £649 3080’s.
The original question the OP asked was whether the 3090 is worth it when it's over double?
Instead people have been answering based on the 3090 costing just slightly more due to the scalping. That's not what the OP asked. Obviously if the 3080 is scalped that much, then the 3090 is worth it. It's a no brainer.
But based on MSRP where the 3090 costs OVER DOUBLE, can anyone honesty justify it and say it's worth it?
These^^^
And if someone can summarize ALL the good points raised in this thread then maybe we'll all be educated. Or answer some qeustions such as;
What is 'worth'?
Is it worth it regarding Cost?
Is it worth it for gaming?
Is it worth it for mining?
Is it worth it because 3080's are unavailable?
IS 100% increase in cost worth it for 15% performance in games at 1080p/1440p/4k?
IS it worth it because you were too slow to get a 3080 and didn't fancy early scalps of £100-£200 so are left with a £1400+ 3090 for choice.
The scalped price argument is weak as some try and justify a RRP 3090 vs a max scalped 3080 cost.
Some have wanted one from the start and I did as I thought the performance for double the money was gonna be more than 15%. But some in the beginning were calling the 3090 a rip off and not worth it when it was released and the 3080 was the card to get, then extreme FOMO through deviation of normalisation had folk spending more. If you got ANY of the AMD 6800+ and 3080+ cards you are fortunate and many have extra disposable from lockdown savings.
Both excellent high res gaming cards and I see the 3080Ti is rumoured now to only have 12GB of 6X.
The true 3090 'worth it' arguement will be answered when the 3080Ti surfaces. Same question will be is the 3080Ti worth it over the 3080?
Google "IS 3090 worth it over 3080" and the findings are conclusive.
