Hi All,

I'm looking to upgrade my motherboard and CPU and would like some advice please.

My current system is as follows: (PSU is different from below, I swapped it for an 650w Gold Modular)

I would like, if possible to just upgrade the motherboard and CPU without the need to upgrade the PSU. I would also like to use a stock cooler if its efficient enough but don't mind upgrading that if I have to.

Budget is £500 if possible and I'm open with going either Intel or AMD, the only issue with switching to Intel is I was under the impression if I did that I would need to change my RAM too, is this the case?

Thanks for your help, it is most appreciated.

RAM is fine.
For gaming Ryzen 5600X and B550 board would fit to that and give major boost and also allow later upgrade to higher core count to keep it good for longer

There are no good bundled coolers if you care about performance.
AMD bundles otherwise good Wraith Prism with too high CPU model for that.

Arctic Freezer 34 would be superb for mainstream CPUs. (of AMD)

i'm in the same boat .. 1700 .. but theres no way on earth i would upgrade now .. i'm waiting till zen 4 and for prices to drop .. :)

Personally wait till 11th gen launches to see if any pricing drops as currently can get 10700k for price range of 5600x etc
And Also secondhand market pricing

Mmm I seem to recall this build from a long while ago :D

I wouldn't have built it without your help mate, how's things? I hope you're well!!

The reason for the upgrade is I have the CPU fault light coming on, on the MB when I start her up and a friend of mine had a look and said he thinks it's the motherboard that's the problem as the CPU isn't locking in place when you push the arm down. Once the arm is down you can still remove the CPU with your fingers.

So I thought sod it, will get a new MB and while I'm at it upgrade the CPU slightly.

What do you think?

Sorry to be a nuisance but could you link the MB and processor please?

I won't be over locking or anything like that, would the stock cooler that comes with the CPU be sufficient?

Update the bios and Drop a 3600 in there or any 3000 cpu series then sell you 1600, that would be a £100 ish upgrade.

Sorry, I should have said. I believe the MB is broken, see post above. So I don't have a PC at the minute and my little boy is doing my head in :)

Surviving mate, sure another 2 kids have popped up my end since you've built your pc haha .

Right on £500

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £500.44 (includes shipping: £10.50)

WiFi is better then your current

Looks like I've got an order to place, thank you mate, you're a star :D

As rule stock coolers are sized for "playing MS Word".
Cooling affects to how high boost clocks CPU achieves and how long it maintains those.
(and especially to noise level)
CPUs themselves basically take care of overclocking.
