I hope to test drive some cars in the summer (up to 10K)

For £10k? Not really. You'd get a better car from the other manufacturers you've mentioned.

Definitely change this criteria, maybe use it to make an ultimate decision if you must but don't exclude cars with over £30 tax out of hand, especially as you want a petrol automatic which typically have slightly worse fuel efficiency stats (and hence potentially tax band). Plus as you've alluded to, you could actually be missing out on newer cars because of that, you can probably get a 2017/2018 SE L trim Octavia for your budget but you would exclude it due to tax...

thanks to you both

i will update OP

id love 1 series, pitty i cant stretch to it, ive driven one, and thought "best car ever" and it was a diesel ! (auto)

Might even be able to squeeze into an approved used one that'll come with a half decent used car warranty - https://usedcars.skoda.co.uk/en/used-cars/skoda/octavia/hatchback-2017-14-tsi-se-l-150ps-dsg-hmbmdqh as an example

You're spending £10,000 on a car, don't get overly hung up on £100 per year worth of running cost, by the time OcUK have encouraged you to upgrade your expectations and blow your budget to smithereens to buy something you don't need or want, low tax will be the least of your worries.
:D

No one suggested an old F92 M3 yet? Only four grand out of budget if you triple the mileage.

The automatic emergency braking seems a bit of a unique feature to look for in a car?
The one time I needed that feature to work and it didn't :( - I pulled away from a roundabout thinking the person in front had gone and they hadn't.

But it's great at phantom braking, warning on bends and navigating around parked cars

[Car - BMW G31]

This is a point, has anyone recommended an A45 AMG yet? He'll get so bored of anything less than 360bhp.
I did of 265bhp so you’re probably not far off ;)

well, technically speaking it’s power to weight ratio not power that matters to me

so 265bhp in a light car > 360 heavy

Why do Hyundai's look like someone has refused to peel the protective film off a TV etc

I wouldn’t touch a Ford with the ecoboost engine personally. Too many head gasket failures (not sure which years) we had problems with a 2014 car we had from new, Ford didn’t want to know either.

my sister and my brothers wife has the eco boost engines, and been fine
Fiesta 2014 and a Focus 2017
Same - 2017 Fiesta.

I googled it though and apparently there are a handful of headgaskets going due to failures in the waterpump or general cooling system. Apparently the engine design means they grenade if the cooling system fails, as opposed to giving you a chance or two to get it fixed.

Nissan Pulsar

I don't have a lot of experience but my impression:

Unless just running to the shops don't bother with the 1.2 - seems reliable engine but such a drag if you are doing any real distance - 1.6 is reasonable but I believe not so many around.

The top Tekna XTRON spec is pretty decently equipped, good seats, slightly understated but aesthetically well put together interior though it is awfully plasticy it doesn't strike you as cheap plastic though some of the trim doesn't quite hit the look they were going for, overall IMO looks OK without a lot of the awful angles or drabness, etc. of the Qashqai which I believe it shares a platform with.

Steering is very Nissan - far more capable than you'd give it credit for from first impression due to being a little vague but it is no Golf, etc.

Overall I'd rate it as an inoffensive vehicle that doesn't really do anything particularly well - very sort of middle of its class - but neither have any real negatives (other than the 1.2 being sadly gutless) but is quite nicely put together as a package.

EDIT: The Top Gear against puts it well "Simple lack of conviction, exactly what purpose does it serve?" - though they recommend avoiding the "disappointing" 1.6 (maybe because the performance doesn't live upto the BHP I dunno - but I definitely wouldn't recommend the 1.2 for any distance driving).

I think the 125bhp focus is more affected than the Fiesta.
Guy at work has had 3x head gaskets under warranty.
I px’d ours for a gen 10 Civic and it’s really good.

thanks Rroff

I've always liked the Qashqai for looks, and seeing one in Hatchback trim , peaked my interest as i would love to have owned one of these.
in fact if you look at my driving history, you will see why

first car, nissan Sunny
second Car , Nissan Almera

see where this is going ?

3rd car another Nissan ! but the sporty 200SX 1.8T

then of course Nissan stopped making the Almera until the Pulsar came up ..

Personally I think the Qashqai looks like the car for people who have given up on life :o but the higher spec Pulsars IMO manage to avoid that.

Sadly as the Top Gear review puts it there is a lack of conviction - a bit more exciting engines and using slightly more premium parts for some of the interior would have really elevated the car out of what is otherwise a nice but mundane package.

(For all that I have been tempted to pick one up for shorter distance run around and so family can use it when flying in to visit as I need a new hatchback - I quite like them as an overall package - you get quite a lot feature wise for the money on the top spec - but the engine just leaves me so disappointed - albeit much of my car history has been ~3L V6s).

EDIT: Normally I'd have probably gone for a Golf but where I'm living at the moment the most convenient garage/dealer is Nissan.
