I hope to test drive some cars in the summer (up to 10K)

I thought Direct Line had issued guidance on this...

Video for @SkodaMart -
. It is becoming a real issue, especially if you own a Prius or a Jazz.

Op - I wouldn't let it worry you that much. You can get a "cat jacket" if you are really concerned.

cat locks are pretty useless
it takes them a little longer, thats all

oh and lol @ direct line link ;)

Slightly over budget, but this is probably what I would buy if I was looking at a mid size hatch, which has your other requirements. I've had 3 of these generation 1 Series; one from new for 3 years covering 30k miles and 2 others as fill in cars whilst waiting for lease cars to arrive. They are fun to drive, have decent interior & spec, look great in M-Sport trim and this one has low mileage so shouldn't need major parts for a while.

BMW 118i M-Sport (2013)
38k miles
Auto
Xenon lights
Power : 170bhp
Road Tax : £150
Combined MPG : 48.7
£11.5k

I think you'd have to be absolutely mad to bust the budget in order to buy an 8 year old bottom of the range BMW for £11.5k. The one you had was somewhat nicer and crucially far newer at the time.

To purchase a car like that would be a mistake for the OP, IMO.

I'm also stunned an 8 year old 1 Series without a badge on the back that says 'M135i' is quite as much as that!

Welcome to 2021 used car prices - This one isn't over priced and is far from bottom of the range, that goes to 114 ES or a 116d SE. (You know this already!)
Also - I prefer to focus on condition than year. This one is the exact same as a 15/16 car with some minor LCI tweaks from then up to 2019.

My point isn't that it's an overpriced example, I suspect it isn't, but that if an 8 year old 118i is £11.5k then something with a less flash badge is probably a far better bet for the OP. I don't see what a 118i offers normal people who don't care about the badge or the driving dynamics over a Toyota or Seat.

Fair enough - a Dacia Sandero it is then :p

Not sure people who care about driving dynamics buy a 118i either. It's purely a badge mobile :p
it was recommended within the context of OP requirements. You won’t find many other fun car options with 170bhp+, RWD, £150 road tax, 50mpg average with Xenons, a decent auto box and less than 60k miles.
Of course there are M135’s, Golf R’s, Seat Cupra’s available and loads of other stuff at this budget... but running costs.

My ex’s 118d Sport was an absolute hoot to drive, not enough power to get you seriously out of shape but more than enough to really have fun with it, I can see why they are/were so popular.

Not tried a new FWD 1er yet but would be surprised if it was as enjoyable when pressing on as the old RWD models.
