The "Top Gear", Season 24/25/26 thread

I realised that any car gets lower range when being hammered, can't imagine that odyssey is that much higher (although I wasn't sure if there was some safeguard as it was still going slowly at the end). I just wondered how a tesla would manage in terms of range when doing the sane thing.

It's pretty much the same as any ICE equivalent.

E.g. I get about 4 miles per kWh driving normally in my Tesla / can get that down to about 2 miles per kWh driving hard
I got about 45 miles per gallon driving normally in my 320d / could get that down to about 20 miles per gallon driving hard

That's on the road, so driving hard on a track / rally stage is obviously way harder.

Fair enough, I was just in the mindset of companies trying to push the range and this flies against that. Does amuse me that they are using containers ships as aren't they the most polluting of all things? I'm sure the top 5 ships put out more fumes then all the cars in the world.

See another headline latched onto. There’s no doubt if your fact was correct those 5 ships would move more product than all the cars in the world do combined and then by a factor of several. Those 5 cargo ships also have nothing to do with the repurposed ship in E-extreme.

The actual point of shipping is significantly less than the logistics impact and cost of flying and F1 aswell as the ship essentially acting as the base and team centre. No need for all the extra fancy trucks etc.

What it does point out is how insignificant personal electrification of cars really does to the environment with the amount being chucked out by ships, lorries, planes and trains.

Indeed, but shows some changes can happen, tech will mature, battery cell and power electronics now pull down electrification costs enough for fuel cell heavy industry to be considered. Significant urban air quality improvements are the more tango able personal benefit.

Trains?

Believe it or not there are still plenty of diesel trains doing the rounds.

I was surprised to see the alfaholics on TG again after CH already did one of his videos a while ago on it

fast forwarded through that, did I miss the good bit

why do they even pretend that presenters were towed behind a car at 90mph, Marquez might be able to survive coming off in an accident, but a 40yr old tv presenter;
ludicrous mode

It was an okay episode, I wished they'd have done something else rather than the entire hour being used to cover the three cars. The G wagon does however sound amazing.

I'd of preferred it if they actually took it more seriously with that ep, the only time one of the cars was put to the test off road was the defender for a little bit.

I'm tired of quarry races, the being dragged behind a car was utterly pointless and I felt the cars were just so different in terms of use case it was boring.

The Nomad was just nuts and didn't get put to the test off road, the G wagon spec was pointless and only the Defender really fit the bill.

Scotland looked nice at least.

It’s a sit back and chill out hour of TV.
Probably very challenging and limited scope filming during a national lockdown !!

The Teslas overheat and go limp if you hammer it lots. You couldnt ***** the battery away like that in one go.

This is not true. It’s not been true since about 2012. The newer Model S and Model X have even done away with the battery pre-heating required to get into Ludicrous or Ludicrous Plus modes. You can just select them now. And the Model 3 and Model Y can be hammered right down to zero battery.
