This is what a scalper looks like..

When I was in my early 20's I scalped a Wii console that I bought from Woolworths (that's how long ago it was)

I didn't buy it to sell on, but when I saw what they were going for it was a no brainer.

I think I paid £179.99 and sold it on eBay for £600+

Can't imagine it's that hard to snowball, by her own admission it sounds like she's not out and about breaking lockdown rules so she's probably not spending much on clothes/gigs/drink/drugs etc, it's not like 17 year olds from non-poor families don't have any disposable income normally, they tend to all have flashy smartphones, consoles, laptops etc. So you get a PS5, flip it, buy another one, flip it, you now have enough to buy 2 PS5s etc etc.

Possibly, given the prices things are going for £2000 a month isn't that much really so she's hardly pushing high volume sales.

I just hope she's paying tax on it as others have mentioned.

@Maccy I've heard "kick up the bum" before but never "punch in the throat" as far as expressions go. lol

Easy now to spot them, a long neck!
My first thought was she's given the BBC a photoshopped picture as a joke, that thing is unreal.

AS long as they declare the profits for tax purposes... which I bet most of them don't.
Jake says he doesn't know how much money he's made from scalping - but the numbers are big. "I honestly don't keep track. Maybe £10,000 since November," he tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.

Jake certainly doesn't.

**** punt I've heard too **** being a very vulgar name for a vageen or a person of ill repute much like this Jake guy in the article.

Just wtf with her neck, her shoulders stop about a foot before her chin appears. Her dad must be a Giraffe.

Whilst I have little respect for scalpers, it appears there are no shortage of people willing to pay scalper prices. It's a cottage industry enabled by the buyer. If we don't pay scalper prices, the perceived value of the item will decline. This is a trivially easy problem to solve, and it isn't being resolved because the actions of buyers are enabling the scalper. We get the market conditions we deserve.

They are using bots which have already been made illegal when it comes to buying another non-essential commodity (concert tickets), but the law simply hasn't caught up to stop bots being used to buy other products. There's nothing positive about what they're doing.

They are making money - that's positive.

Don't see how it's any different between a corner shop owner going down the cash and carry and buying tins of beans for 10p then selling for 30p.

I think someone needs to just organise all the gamers and get the news out that no one should buy any gpus above a reasonable price (agreeing this price beforehand). Maybe we should have a #GPUforthemasses movement and rally everyone to boycott the scalpers. In theory that should work right!?

I am sure they pay tax on the initial purchase and on their profit.

Are these scalpers, most likely NOT

The scalpers will be paying tax on the initial purchase (VAT).

Whether they do on the subsequent profit - who knows - but that's entirely irrelevant to my comments..

Only the idiots paying inflated prices to blame not the as scalpers.

Normally I'd agree, but right now due to the worldwide silicon shortage there is literally no alternative in many cases.
Many people out there have for example had parts fail, or new systems with no integrated GPU, and simply aren't able to buy replacements or video adaptors because of people like this. Worst side of capitalism unfortunately.

When there are options it's one thing, right now there is no choice, NO logical alternatives.
If you check stores; even the most basic video cards are all but sold out now in most cases, and prices on the second hand market have gone crazy for again ANYTHING moderately modern.

The 26-year-old dad from Cambridge has been trying to get his hands on the new PlayStation but says the whole experience has been "stressful, frustrating and painful".

Some serious perspective is needed here. ^. Its a games console that lets you play games a bit faster/at a better resolution. He is 26, and if this is causing him stress and pain then he needs to have a look at himself and his priorities.

Also, i am on the fence with the whole thing. I don't see how countries that embrace capitalism so willingly can take objection to it to be honest.

I would totally understand if it was medicine, water, essential food etc. However, the latest games console/gfx card/pair of trainers? Meh.

Ironically we all get totally fleeced by the housing market (where housing is far more essential than the latest games console) yet we do little about that because it is just "market forces" or "market prices".

Is the whole situation at the moment irritating? Yes. however, again some perspective is needed. It really isnt the end of the world that someone cant play games a few frames per second faster than they could last year.

There are countless other threads here where people are lauded for their prowess in flipping crypto or Tesla shares, what is intrinsically different about GPUs and PS5s?

Making profit on selling something that is in high demand is only allowed under certain circumstances apparently.

I'd say the difference is Crypto/Tesla shares are essentially just financial assets; the lack of them doesn't impact anyone in doing anything else.

GPUs/PS5s by contrast are literally the enabling requirement for a very popular hobby; so without those you are hobbled in being able to take part in said hobby at all - no console/graphics card, you CANNOT game. No Tesla shares/Crypto...nothing else is affected, you literally just don't have them.

It'd be like if Scalpers suddenly took over ALL musical instruments, football rights etc and blocked out the vast majority of fans and people from being able to take part. Or if Scalpers suddenly obtained ALL the tyres for all vehicles. Suddenly vehicles would be unusable as soon as a tire wore out.

As I said on the outset I don't have a issue with people buying and selling, taking advantage of people willing to pay over the odds. This still allowed your average shopper to compete as they do not have any unfair advantage.
However using the normal means is one thing, but using bots is what I find wrong and should be looked at. Why did the government ban ticket resellers from using bots if there was nothing wrong with it.
I agree the current situation is not fully down to scalpers as the are other factors in play. But using bots and automated software does not help the matter. I mean you only need to look at who is supplying these bot software? I don't see any reputable firms supplying these. And by supporting this/hackers money is being fed into the criminal elements.
