2021 Season Chilli Growing

@Griffo - That plant is 154 days old according to the spreadsheet :D I could have had a quicker crop if I hadn't pruned him quite so drastically around 60 days in.
I do live dangerously and take a bite. I don't know why I do with the superhots because they are often painful and have long lasting effects. I still do though, every time... Just to really get a gauge on what I'm dealing with I guess

Here's my most recent painful experience, a Jay's Peach Ghost Scorpion from end of Jan. You can see how oily the flesh was in the second pic.... The heat from one bite flowed over my head like a wave, I could feel the sweat bead on my skin in seconds. It was so damn hot and the heat lingered strong for a good 10 mins! Super floral, interesting taste, very much the usual superhot c.chinense notes too. Not a pepper for just snacking on ;)

Also @Griffo , grow seems to coming along nicely there. 25litres and bubbles... Gonna be some big ol' plants
How much air do you have going through?

Cheers @pooey, interesting daring approach! I'm hoping at least one or two of mine are mild enough not to kill me on tasting that way!

154 days I can work with :). Expectation setting is what I like!

Regarding the pump, it's 1.7W with three power settings. The sausages avoid saying any cubic anything of anything on the product page though. I've got it on lowest and it's rocking the basket/net things a little as it is. So am hopeful it's enough.

It's a silly thing to look forward to each morning, seeing how they've got on!

The only thing at the back of my mind now is how much my electricity bill will be going up now I've got both lamps lit!

!! Might be silly but at least it's a joyous thing to look forward to! I probably look like an obsessive chilli madman to the casual observer but God damn do I love growing those little ********!

If you're down with 154 days shoot me a PM and I'll send you some KSLSB seeds

I have found some for sale local to me. I'd like to try to grow these on my windowsills initially, then maybe look at some sort of poly thing to stick in the planter. They have a naga variant so I'll be getting that, I'm thinking maybe try a maximum of 5 different types to start. Can anyone advise which of these are a good blend of heat, flavour and relative easiness to grow for a newbie? They're plants, not seeds.

Loco
Cayenne
Yellow reaper
Guardia Clio
Celeb perorcino
Aji mango
Aji pineapple
Fantalli yellow
Bolivian rainbow
Orange haberero
Mushroom bonnet yellow
Purple UFO
Stromboli
Hungarian black
Trinidad moruga yellow
Devils red
Padron
La bomba
Chocolate BBG
Birds eye
Ring of fire/basket

The bonnet and habanero are probably as hot as you can go this year without supplemental light, depending on how old these plants are right now.
Those two are pretty good all round chillis which probably hit your metrics.
I love the flavour of c.baccatum strains and the Aji Mango is a pretty prolific chap, he'd probably do you a nice chilli bush, the c.baccatums do a bit better in cooler temps compared to the c.chinense. The Aji Pineapple (also called Lemon Drop) is another classic baccatum. They're both mediumish heat, comparable to the lower end of the scotch bonnet range I think.

I'd give the Hungarian Black a go too, he's a cool looking c.annuum, not much heat at all, very similar to a jalapeno but he'll get you an early crop and, much like all chilli plants, if you keep picking ripe pods he will keep producing until it gets too cold.

Thank you so much! Will let you know how I get on

OK I'm part of the club now, although I don't have a clue what I'm doing. The lady who sold me them has kindly given me some feed for a month. I'll start ordering the bits and pieces I need and do some research.

They're currently sat in my office which is usually very warm. The window is west-facing.

Cheers pooey, message sent!

My new arrivals have perked up this morning after arriving a bit slouchy, so it looks like everyone is surviving the swimming lessons so far!

I've noticed today the leaves on the Sainsburys ones are gaining this bobbly texture. Not sure how best to describe it so am failing in my internets so far. I am assuming it's a nutrient thing and will check the PH later today. This is the kratky kids so was/an hoping they'll shush.

Thinking about it, my overwintered soil chilli plants, one of those has similar artefacts on some of its leaves. So maybe it's my air! :p

Soon time to start my seeds for 2021 outdoor growing season..

No greenhouse or tunnel here in London so my chilli's will be rawdogging the outside. I've a tiny grow tent with a 100w LED that I've been growing in for a few months. Not done an outdoor chilli grow before though, will be digging through seeds of over 100 varieties to decide on 20 or so plants.

Any other Londoners growing outside this year?

Chilli wise, I got some Aji Red, Orange Habanero, and Chilli Bomb on the go, plus some beef tomatoes, and some seeds from a supermarket pack of cherry tomatoes that I fermented for a week then planted.

The supermarket cherry tomatoes are growing best of them all so far! Will get em all potted at the weekend.

Other half knocked the tray that I was germinating them in over a while back so I have no idea what most of the seedlings are, will just set them loose.

Sounds like some good progress there @mid_gen
Just had a little read about fermenting seeds, I didn't know that was something you had to do to harvest tom seeds. Very interesting.
The seedling lottery always happens to me too haha no matter how diligently I try to organise and label things!

Oh man, that might be jumping in at the deep end. I have windowsills and a raised garden bed, can I grow anything with them?

Your photos look amazing btw.

@Cadder You could buy some already established super hot plants online and keep them indoors until late spring / summer is here then put them outside while also growing some fast fruiting varieties from seeds yourself. That way you can learn how to grow from seed this season while also getting that super hot fix :)

My first grow ever.

Aji Limon, Orange habanero, razzamatazz and Apache. But I'm having issues with a few of the plants. Can't figure out what it is..... They're grown indoors under led, but they've had the odd day out when the Manchester sun is out.... Any ideas?

Hey @Kris Rodway I think you might have cold damage on your leaves, I put my overwintered plant that has been indoors for a really long time out in the sun a few days back and had a very similar thing happen. I think perhaps waiting for things to get a bit warmer and slowly introducing the plants to time outdoors should help.

I am guessing nutrients too @Griffo as that is the trickiest variable to manage with hydro.
Could be oedema potentially where the plants are taking up too much water & more than they can use and transpire which swells the leaf cells.
What do they look like on the underside?

Looking good @Cadder glad the team here managed to sort you out with some recommendations.
Keep them warm, water from the bottom sparingly and you should have some top plants!

Awesome rathy! The second one is the overwintered? That guy looks excellent. I'm hoping mine will do similar if I remember to actually top them so they don't end up 5ft tall!

Regarding the leafy business, hang on let me check underneath...

hm they look pretty fine underneath. Although I've noticed some pale blotches appearing now too. They have both extended their roots out of the nets nicely so I think i'll just wait and see how they get on. Don't want to fuss too much, they have to adapt...yes!
