Images of items I have purchased (except trainers [no feet pics])

Not bad for £1 :)

Tado.

And a load of these trvs to go with it.

Did you self install the tado?

What do you think of it? How was it to fit/install? My alternative would be hive but I see mixed reviews on amazon etc.

Considering getting one myself with TRVs. Am I correct in saying the TRVs just bolt on to actuate /move existing valves?

P.s. Did you get a good price anywhere, let me know! :D

Tado is this forums favourite but I'm a Hive man. Never had an issue, and it can be had for cheap with BG installation from Amazon super simple.

I had hive and it worked fine to be honest, it's more the integration with TRVs I'm specifically interested in (so I can heat parts of my house and not others)

Yep - 4 TRVs deep here. Works a treat. Each room is controllable, and if a certain room drops below a certain amount it can turn the boiler on. All within a single app with no BS subscription or anything (I think some of the other apps do).

Living Room Rear offline because I need to swap the valve (Hive has adaptors for basically every kind of valve other than the random one that is fitted there)

Yeah it was fine.

Took the ancient looking thermostat off. (it was yellowing! Eww)
Was a 240v connection.

Turned the breaker off. Checked wiring (and asked on here) tested to make sure power was off.
Screwed in wires.

It's not fixed to wall yet as getting plastering done. So no point yet.

It then downloaded an update. All. Done.

Trvs are even easier.

'pair' in the app
Remove old (just unscrews)
Put on new one.
Auto calibrate

Other option was hive. But went for tado. Nest wasn't an option as no trvs. Trvs are the most important thing. This is a small detached house with a lot of windows. So some rooms bake, others are cool. In my study without smart trvs I'd be roasting or freezing.

Why didn't I go for hive? Basically aesthetics.
I think the app and devices work better. But functionally I think they are identical.

Cost?
40 each trv (cex and eBay) - 4x
40 for the main thermo and bridge (ebay, brand new) - 1x
20 additional stat - 1x

Total outlay so far - 220.
I think this looks like a bargain vs new!

Got two more rooms to add. Less urgent. One is the gfs work room. I said it's up to her if she gets one. Other is ensuite. Might not bother. Not really worth it.
Not doing the utility or hall either

By chance I got a V2. So got geofencing for free.

Edit.
I don't have a combi. This is an old tank set up. So I didn't get the hot water control. As I just have that on an hour a day. Might add it on in future. But probably not.

Oh. I think it's made a difference already. But the old thermostat was so bad. Set at 20 it wouldn't come on until 17.and turn off at like 23. And it was in the North facing main entrance! So my south facing study would be being heated while getting sun and get to 27c!

Aye mines a horrible old thermostat too! You got a great price on the thermostat.I can't see thermostat plus hot water being less than £150... Mines an unvented cylinder which is quite good, plus a crap make boiler.

It appears the TRVs are on offer on amazon (£35 per unit?). I tallied up ill want 10 without any in the bathroom, so tempted to make the purchase!

Sounds like they are practically identical in functionality

That's a great price! I'll tell the gf!

Be aware of you get the new main unit and you want geofencing it is a subscription like @dLockers said

Aye im getting my system drained down and replaced in multiple parts so might get some TRVs replaced at the same time

If you can, try and get Danfoss’ pressure independent control valves and get gas heads. The PITRVs are more accurate and will regulate both pressure and temperature, and gas heads react much quicker to changing temperatures than liquid or wax.

Also, return temperature limited on any towel rails is great.
