year, the ecoboost is the newer engine, its the 1L turbo as apposed to 1.6 non-turbo

better on fuel and lower tax

make sure you go for the 125 BHP one, its a 6 speed gearbox not the old 5 speeds which i have in mine, they are awful really, high RPM all the time :(

Is a 1L turbo more reliable?

stand-out motor, though, is the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder Ecoboost, which offers spectacular performance and economy: we managed more than 50mpg while making respectable progress in the 123bhp variant (a 99bhp version is also offered); economy typically only on offer from noisier diesels. It also confers a remarkable new layer of smoothness and refinement on the hatchback. It's a real game-changer.

Other engines include 84bhp, 103bhp and 123bhp versions of a fairly tame 1.6-litre petrol, while a 180bhp version of the 1.6 Ecoboost petrol sits below the ST as a cooking Zetec-S model. Like all lukewarm hatchbacks, it seems disappointing if you’re secretly hankering after the gratifying pace of something hot, and even armed with the perkier Ecoboost, the Zetec-S is unlikely to set your pulse racing.

It comes with a huge choice of engines, too. The petrol engine line-up starts with a 1.6-litre that has to be worked hard and isn’t particularly efficient. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder Ecoboost might sound like a small engine but it comes in either lively 99bhp or 123bhp versions and is in fact a capable and refined choice. There are also two 1.5-litre four-cylinder Ecoboost engines to choose from, both with more punch than the smaller engines but inevitably a greater thirst for fuel.

Description says nothing about it

You will need to make sure both belts have been done or get them to do it for free (bargaining chip)

If its got full service history, hand book and 2 keys worth a look

Isn't a 1L turbo stressed more? For his budget it won't be a low miler

Just because it's a turbo, doesn't mean it's inherently stressed.

The same 1L "Fox" engine is available in a Non-turbo 79bhp version, so the Turbo is adding 44bhp (in the 123bhp version) - which is a fairly "normal" amount for most cars that have turbo vs non-turbo versions of the same engine.

Good luck getting a 1.0 Ecoboost cambelt done for free - I believe it's around £800 due to the amount of labour involved (as the cambelt is submerged in oil within the engine)

They also fixed the carbon buildup and low fuel pressure problems?

Carbon Buildup affects all Direct Injection engines (not just the Ecoboost - and certainly not as widely reported on the Ecoboost as say on Mini engines).

I wasn't aware of a fuel pressure problem, but a quick look suggests it's high mileage related, and a relatively simple fix in just requiring the HPFP to be replaced (much the same as many other models e.g. VAG 2.0TFSI fuel pump issues)

They only replaced the leaky coolant pipes afaik, which stops the most obvious overheating issue.
There was also a recall for clutch slip/overheating, which had the potential for the clutch housing to burst, rupturing fluid lines and cause a fire (which was also misrepresented in the press as being an ecoboost issue)
