Does anyone know of any reliable PPF installers in the Buckinghamshire area? I contacted one and whilst they seem to be knowledgeable, they seemed surprised that I enquired as to if they polish the area before they apply the film. This surprised me as they mention using a clay bar on the car which usually requires a polish afterwards as clay does mar paintwork.

My friend runs AutoFx paint protection (Milton Keynes) and he partners with a detailer so can offer all these services.

Has the contract to do the PPF for Aston Martin in Newport Pagnell, worth a call!

Auto Wax Works in Bicester (based at Bicester Heritage) are a real top quality outfit. They install Xpel self-healing PPF.

Owner is a nice chap called Charles. Pretty pricey, but you will get an absolutely perfect result.

Not sure if it's a car cleaning thread as such, but is there any way to repair laquer peel on red paint?

We had to get a few other panels painted around 6 months ago, and now more have appeared. This is the drivers door, but the rear door has a few small signs of it too. It seems to be a common Mercedes issue, but sadly they only acknowledge it on the Opal Red and this is Jupiter Red so they don't seem to have accepted it as a paint fault.

The car has a few other dings etc and we're looking to change in the next 6-12 months and so i'm not sure a proper respray of these panels is worthwhile as due to the other damage it makes more sense to just sell it in shoddy condition than get everything fixed.

I wasn't sure if it was possible to just wet sand the edges and spray some laquer on and then try and rub some polish in. Just to try and stop it getting worse.

When it eventually stops raining  ..... got my car polisher from halfords yesterday going to see how easy is it to polish some horrible weather & sun damaged blemishes out with some Meguiars ultimate compound!

Halfords car polisher is a fantastic product :D Just removed 3 ugly UV damage swirls from the clearcoat & polished the front headlamp unit UV damage away saving me a good chunk of £££ as no need to buy a new one now!

Which one? Their dual action? I have it but can't say it's very good, it stalls at slower speeds when you're trying to spread the compound. I actually returned the first one for a replacement as it would hardly spin at lower speeds, the replacement is better only just but still stalls at low speeds.

Sounds like you are pressing it down too hard on the paint, I have one and its great. The weight of the polisher is all the pressure it requires

Has anyone got or used the Mitchell & King DA and could offer any comments. The inference is it's smoother to use than other DA's in its price range.
I'm aware most of these machines for £100-£150 are effectively the same but rebadged. Just wondered if the M&K was different as they have a good reputation

Definitely not pressing it down too hard, it literally can't handle any form of contact at low settings (the settings it states is for spreading product in the table within the manual).

Can only imagine that I've had two duds, the first one before exchanging wouldn't get spinning at the lower settings at all.

Does Carnuba wax have a shelf life? Ive got an old tin of FK1000P, and after using it a few weeks back, im not really seeing the protection lasting all that long, after the 1st of couple of days, it beaded up nicely, but since then it really isnt beading up well at all. I did a little trial with half the car with FK and the rest just washed and dried with BSD as a drying aid. The BSD'd part seems to be holding up better. The car is only 8 months old and was clayed and had fall out remover applied, then it got a polish with some Autofinesse tripple before the wax.

Either its gone off, or It may not have cured properly due to temps?

Cheers

They can do depending on storage. However are you aware that FK1000P uses synthetic waxes so might be considered a sealant. It's possible that it's not bonding as well to the Triple as the BSD.
If you've got an area you can remove the Triple and apply to bare paint you could test this.

No the big muffa one with 120mm pads :p The hefty weight means you just glide it over the paintwork & hang on to it!!! Will buff most clearcoat light scratches out but anything deeper is a respray or mobile repair. For £35 its fantastic quality though & seems very reliable by all the reviews it got on halfords website!

I think that dual action one is way too expensive (£89!!) as at the end of the day you cannot buff out scratches that are too deep so it seems like too much effort to use to polish the entire vehicle with such a small buffing pad!

Anyone got any discount codes going for any online detailing retailers? Need to make a fairly large order to replenish a lot of my supplies, so would like to save some money if possible. Thanks.

Found the hose on my Nilfisk had developed a slight leak where it connects to the unit last week, but nearly destroyed it trying to unscrew it to check the o-ring....it had corroded on slightly. My fault, I should really have disconnected after each use, but I always just left it attached and coiled it up. So I thought "sod it" and bought a new, good quality 10m hose from DirectHoses, and also picked up one of their short trigger guns.

Very impressed! Much easier to use than the standard long gun, means I can spray down the car easily and leave the other hand free for picking my nose or whatever. The hose is better quality too and more manageable (no surprise, think a lot of you have the same) and has the bonus of having quick release connectors at both the gun end and the pressure washer end, meaning I can easily disconnect it and coil it up neatly after use. Score one for lazy sods like me.

I've also just ordered one of the Muc Off brushes mentioned earlier in the thread - my wheels are in for refurbishment this week, want something to take better care of them. I already have an EZ detail brush which gets to the barrel great, but is a bit cumbersome for the face.

Whilst on the question of wheel cleaning - what's everyone's thoughts on the safety of using Bilt Hamber Autowheel regularly? My wheels were first refurbed about 3.5 years ago, but despite taking no damage, over the last winter, the lacquer on all of them basically started to fall off. I have been taking good care of them with regular washing, but that almost always involved being spraying them with BH AW, leaving for a couple of minutes, agitating and then rinsing thoroughly. Part of me wonders if it's perhaps too strong a product for such regular use, so I'm going to dilute it from now one, but I figure it's pH neutral so should be pretty safe even when neat (and that's how it's supplied for use). Is it possible I might have been washing them too often, or just a case of a poor quality refurb?

what pressure washer would people be buying for car use at the moment? Is it right that the aftermarket foam lances are way than those that come with the machines?
