Sweet, FBI sting with free 'Anom' app captures crooks

"All they talk about is drugs, violence, hits on each other, innocent people who are going to be murdered, a whole range of things," said Australian Federal Police commissioner Reece Kershaw.

Sounds like a worthwhile operation.

Seemingly works twice after the Encrochat network was infiltrated and resulted in a similar setup.

How hard is it to make your own encrypted chat app, can't be far off criminals going down that route in the future.

In years to come, twitter will be revealed to be a sting operation by the ECB and HR Mangers.

You mean 4chan.

In fact I think it was mooted as being something similar since about 2008, roundabout when they starting archiving posts rather than deleting them.

exactly seemed surprising criminals wouldn't have heard of that , but maybe 'Anom' evidence gathering was happening at same time.

repatriation/recovery of a bit-coin ransom seemed to be the other (not sure if it was related) coup ... they thought that was secure too.

All these big sites are tracking us. This is why governments are very reluctant to crack down on them.

It's not surprising they fell for a faked app. A lot of people are dumb these days and don't realise that when you use technology someone else can be listening.

The very dumb post messages and pictures on social media of their criminal activities.

ah the good old fashioned honeypot...I suspect there are a lot more eyes on these various 'secure' apps that people think

most of the big drug dealers of europe were got similar way. why would anyone do anything illegal online or put data which you dont want known through a device or app is beyond me. as above big stings will make people more cautious. also why some people still use old style phones.

I don't get why criminals use these apps you can use pgp encryption for free without an app with "GPG4usb" or whatever
https://www.gpg4usb.org/index.html
the source code for it is on source forge too

They all used some illegal phone network that got compromised loads of them didn't get caught though only the ones who acted like it was secure 100%

one of them got identified from a cheese picture he had sent on there

seems the police are scanning photos of hands and lifting fingerprints unless it's to protect an informer

It's good news to get so many criminals off the streets and credit where it's due but if this is all just setting the stage for a wider assault on personal privacy by banning encrypted communication I won't support it.

Having government and spy agencies able to monitor all communication is like something out of China, its essentially digital/virtual totalitarianism and not only that but most aspects of life are being pushed into the digital world and towards it so there'll be no escaping it.

I'm sure most people in China would be critical of the social credit system and techno tyranny if they weren't absolutely **** scared of all of the monitoring taking place and being digitally gulagged by authorities, it's not worth living in that sort of world just to catch a few criminals every now and then who will probably be released after a few years anyway.

They are more likely to support encryption on the basis that it makes people careless with what they post on line. Then hey presto a nice sting operation with a dodgy app seeded into gen pop.

They busting more people than ever before regardless of this going on. And the busts are becoming more frequent.
yet the drugs are still as available as ever, I guess we can't really talk about it on this family friendly forum though.

the media gives the impression they are winning, they aren't.

use tor and do your own investigation
