More GPU price increases!

Globalisation is winding down. Prices are going up. I fully expect high end graphics cards to be retailing for around £6k - £8k inside 12 months. Real inflation (not the Bank of England fake/lie inflation) is already running at between 10% - 15%, and unless interest rates start to rise, this is only going to get worse until a hyperinflationary collapse happens. Unfortunately, at this point, the majority of ordinary people will be dead from starvation. Just when we get to this point is unknown, but graphics card prices will be the least of your worries.

Will there be zombies? God, I hope there are zombies...

I remember when it was £69.99

Still overpriced in my opinion. I bought a used 2Gb Radeon 5850 Toxic Edition for £18 several months ago at the peak of the GPU crises. Its much faster than a 1030. There are lots of used GPUs faster and cheaper than a 1030 in fact so I've no idea why people buy them for playing games.

I'm currently playing Tomb Raider (2013) at 1440p high settings and it's smooth as butter.

I'm not giving in to these insane prices so going to wait a year or two.

Its hard to predict.

Within 5 minutes of googling I'll be able to find quotes from executives at tech companies stating the following:

"the shortage will last until q2 2021"
"the shortage will last until early 2022"
"the shortage will last until mid 2022"
"the shortage will last until the end of 2022"
"the shortage will last until 2023" - this most recent quote is from Sony, discussing Playstation 5 stock
Yeah haha basically nobody knows anything

Courtesy of the semiconductor shortages, foundry prices have been on the rise. Both TSMC and Samsung are planning to increase their advanced manufacturing costs by up to 20%. Many outlets (including us) thought that this was push up consumer electronic prices in the coming months, but it looks like that won’t be the case. According to reports from Asian outlets, mature processes (such as 7nm, 10nm, 14nm) are getting much more expensive (=20%). Advanced nodes, on the other hand, (5nm) are being let off with a relatively minor hike (=10%), likely because they’re already insanely expensive.

However, the price increase won’t be uniform across the board. Long-term clients such as Apple and AMD will be getting preferential treatment. This makes sense as the 5nm node used by Apple is crazy expensive, while AMD’s 7nm capacity is next to none. The former will pay 2% more for its chip supply while the latter will pay 5% more.

It’ll be interesting to know how much Intel is paying TSMC for fabbing its Xe-HPG graphics cards. Considering that this is the US chipmaker’s first advanced foundry in Taiwan, it certainly won’t be on the same level as AMD. At the same time, having rival Intel as a customer is a big boon for TSMC, both stock-wise and in terms of impetus.

Apple is TSMC’s largest client accounting for roughly 25% of all chips produced by the foundry, followed by AMD. Qualcomm and MediaTek will battle it out for the third and fourth positions this year.

A 1030 will not suit many people, but for playing old MMORPGs and strategy games like LOTRO, ESO and MWO a 1030 is passable, uses only 30 watts and if you buy a passively cooled version no noise from fans on the gpu. It's fine to put into an old 2nd system with say a i2500k and run these old games. Saving wear on the new system and gpu which are very over powered for these types of games. Pleased with my 1030 in this respect

Don't. Better look for an AMD Radeon RX 550 2GB. It is faster and better product overall.

One big question remains:
Percentage increase of what?
Accurate wafer prices would go some way in trying to figure out how much the various AMD CPUs, GPUs and console APUs actually cost to make.

It would useful to know, especially as I suspect if it was known, people might start to cotton on how much of the AMD/Nvidia/Intel price increases are just opportunistic, and seeing how much PCMR is willing to pay.

Not easy to pick up a 550 with a warranty for £70 though as I did

You can get a secondhand GTX1050 2GB for £100 with a 2 year warranty!

£100 isn't £70 though, and the 1050 uses more watts. If a new 1030 does what I want why do I need to pay more for a secondhand card that uses more electricity (I may as well take up mining if I want to be environmentally unfriendly), as I said the 1030 isn't for everyone, but it suits me
