Tech reviewers: Trouble for AMD! AMD must cut prices! Damn Intel! Intel are back! Retaking the gaming crown!

OCUK: Meh
Well we've just been (are still in really) a pandemic where everyone had to stay inside - maybe we're all upgraded and spent for now :p

Also not wanting to switch to DDR5 until it's mature, etc.

And lastly we can't upgrade our GPUs very easily and GPUs are probably the bottleneck for most.

12600k looks like a good CPU, sure. I try not to be an early adopter tho :p Let others experience the pain and come back later when everything's fixed :p

TBF,DDR4 seems to not really reduce performance that much. In my case I already upgraded my rigs,so will hold off the immediate future.

From an engineering and design standpoint, Alder Lake does give me the fizz quite a bit. I love the outright single threaded P-core performance.

The "meh" bit comes from the fact that the motherboards are a rip off, DDR5 is quite simply bonkers (£300 for 32GB?) and whilst it seems half sensible in gaming, Intel still feels the need to set these things up with a crazy max TDP.

For all the hype, disappointing. High power consumption, high platform costs and potential backwards compatibility issues (DRM games).
Not enough gain and power efficiency (which matters now), happy with my 5950x for some time yet.

they seem to handle the watts and distribute the heat fine though.

it's not like your CPU is sitting at 240watt or whatever whilst your browsing youtube.
for me the heat output of the PC would be too much though..

my current cpu and gpu run around 50-55c under load, and in the summer It heated my whole living room with the exhaust air during gaming so....

I guess in the winter that alderlake seems a lot more attractive though

I ordered a 12600kf for delivery tomorrow, unfortunately it will be going back.
Decided to get a 5800x and a b550 strix, then will look at the zen3 3D chips next year.

Might look into z690 again when DDR5 is easily accessible and settled in price

Just cancelled my orders also. I'm going to refrain from dipping my toe.... Getting hold of DDR5 and other components for a new build is going to be a nightmare with inflated prices. Riding this one out and common sense prevails (for once)

You suggesting tech reviewers are telling people it's an excellent idea to buy in?

It's all way better than Intels last stuff and they are now competitive with the performance from AMD with gaming being a strong point.

But are they bringing a game changer or is it landing in the same ballpark we've had for some time.

The gaming crown is made of tin these days, a modern 6-8 core will absolutely get the job done while the monster cpus are horrific gaming value but they have the crown by performance at low res which then becomes irrelevant at higher graphical load.

The only reason to not say meh is to cheer that Intel has got into competitive shape but the performance or value we can get as a consumer hasn't changed a whole lot.

I must be one of the few people who isn’t blown away. A year later after Ryzen 5000 and we are talking 5-10% better in games at most. Much higher power draw under load and higher heat output.

That said, the 12600 looks very good. If I had to buy a machine now, I might well consider that.

Tbf though that's the sort of margin ryzen 5000 had over 10th gen in games yet people went crazy for it.

You do that and you might not even get an upgrade path to Meteor Lake, but it's just a guess.
