KUDOS Cat.

Thanks!

Well we've just been (are still in really) a pandemic where everyone had to stay inside - maybe we're all upgraded and spent for now :p

Also not wanting to switch to DDR5 until it's mature, etc.

And lastly we can't upgrade our GPUs very easily and GPUs are probably the bottleneck for most.

12600k looks like a good CPU, sure. I try not to be an early adopter tho :p Let others experience the pain and come back later when everything's fixed :p

TBF,DDR4 seems to not really reduce performance that much. In my case I already upgraded my rigs,so will hold off the immediate future.

Wonder what a well clocked and timed DDR5 kit could do for Fallout 4 or Skyrim SE though? Would be very expensive, but for a more-money-than-sense Fallout 4 rig it might work well.

Aside from the poor perf/watt when actually doing stuff where ADL-S is quite poor, the other thing to think about is that ADL-S is over 200mm². That's very big compared to Zen 3 so while a monolith is easier to assemble, AMD should have plenty of scope to reduce prices.

It would be interesting to see how it performs, but the Core i5 12400 might be good enough as it has 6 performance cores. It makes me wonder whether its using the smaller ADL chip:

12400 review and this time it's a retail sample not ES

tldr: the $185 12400 and $160 12400f is faster than the $300 5600x in gaming. The 12400 and 12400f are also faster than the $550 11900k

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-core-i5-12400-review

The Intel i5-12400 and i5-12400f are the undisputed kings of budget gaming.

The review was done using budget DDR4 memory and in a couple weeks there will be $100 motherboards for sale so you can pickup 16gb DDR4 memory, an i5-12400f and motherboard for around $300 in total - incredible value. 2022 is looking significantly better for PC gaming!

The Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 5 5600G will need decent price drops because of this. Even the new Intel stock cooler has been improved.

Also people have forgotten that the Core i5 12400 is using a mixture of salvaged dies and a unique smaller die with no E cores. The SKUs with the E cores not only have greater application performance, but also a faster IGP - they are shared with the laptop models. Hence Intel can still maintain margins on these cheaper models.

wow what a cpu the 12100 is. AMD nowhere to be seen at this price point.

The problem for someone wanting an AMD mainstream/budget build is also that the Core i5 10400F and Core i5 11400F are quite cheap too,and B560 motherboards are not expensive either. As time progresses the B660 motherboards will also start dropping in price(just like the B560 motherboards did too).

Well if you can get a b660 for £100, I would go that root if budget allows.

I think the H610/B660 motherboards will start to drop in price as more budget options will appear.

You'd have to be daft to buy a quad core part these days, especially as you say if you can get the 10400f/B560 at the same price for a better long term system if you have zero intention of swapping out the CPU.

Obviously if you are on a mega ultra tight budget, or just doing lighter work then maybe it is an OK choice, but the 10400f is a really great choice too.

I agree,6 cores is an ideal sweet-spot with 8~12 cores if you are really wanting a higher performance rig.
