USB KVM for gaming PC and Work laptop sharing

@Relentless81 Thank you for the update. Be curious if you do plug the mouse into the Ugreen USB switch and if you get any issues. I have read reviews that with my Corsair K70 RGB there can be a noise issue. This might be a Corsair issue. I think I might try the Ugreen given the value for money - worth as punt! Cheers.

Hi there.
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I am now in the boat that you all were in. So I just wanted to ask how you all got on with the various devices and if any KVM's have been able to work well with mechanical keyboards?
Thanks
Alan

I went with a Ugreen USB splitter in the end to share my keyboard and mouse with gaming pc and work laptop

Don't use it anymore though as binned pc gaming off and got an Xbox Series X

I've had the UGreen for a while, with my SteelSeries Apex Pro KB connected to it, and my Logitech mouse connect to the KB (so i can add another peripheral to the last port on the USB switch).

No problems for me.. only that the KB is only detected once you are on the desktop. I found that mine does not turn on when you get to the POST screen. Not had any other issues, people may have mentioned above... though i am tempted to replace this with a Sabrent one as i prefer auto-switch which the UGreen does not do.

I use a USB 3.0 one I got from Amazon and it works like a charm. No additional latency I can notice either. Only minor gripe is I had a work USB headset connected and discord on the main PC would always detect it and ask me if I wanted to switch despite me saying every time ‘do not switch’ or ‘ignore this device’. We got new laptops (although I hesitate to use new, this thing has a 1366x768 display) and now the headset goes into the laptop. Discord still defects the monitor speakers though!

Whilst not a USB solution I went with an IP-KVM since looking at a suitable standard KVM that supports 144Hz was going to cost £250+ and I wasn't confident about latency of said devices.

I bought a Raspberry Pi 4 and ordered a CSI-2 from China (which was half the price than buying in the UK), built a custom cable for it and set up PiKVM. I can remotely access my work laptop sat next to me via a browser whilst using my home PC set up for gaming/browsing.
There are some minor drawbacks like a bit of latency in screen response and depending on kit you might not be able to take advantage of any huge screen setups (limitation of the CSI-2 module) but it's been a great change and keeps my desktop clean.

If it's no longer required (not that we'll ever go back to the office full-time) I can repurpose the Pi in my other home setups.

I managed to get one of those StarTech X2 Displayport X2 USB KVM's for £27 off ebay and ran into a real head scratcher of an issue where USB would drop out on my main gaming rig but was fine on the work laptop. Turns out my BIOS was still stock so I did a few updates for it 4 to be exact got it to a 2019 BIOS and the issues stopped happening.

If you can find one on the cheap off ebay it's well worth it. The main reason I got this was so I didn't nacker up the Displayport on my main display as I was just plugin it into my dock every day thought I needed to stop that.

The one I found was StarTech SV231DPDDUA. **MAKE SURE YOUR BIOS IS UPTO DATE**
