Living Forever??

Unless you could stop the aging process at a specific age then what's the point living "forever" if your body keeps getting older, I mean who wants to be 200yo but with the body of a 200yo?

Yeah, and considering many of us already end up pooing ourselves in a care home in what can only be described as an existence of pure misery living forever wouldn't be great.

I think it would be a terrible idea for humanity. It would result in massive overcrowding and pressure on resources. But it would also cause humanity's progress to stall.

To quote Steve Jobs:
No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

I dunno man, my little one poos herself all the time and I think she loves it. Maybe we could learn a lot from them.

I mean, obviously the treatment would involve cell regeneration so a lot of the aging process would be reversed.

I think slowing the aging process will happen first, and gradually it'll improve until humans have a much longer life span. People who are "bored" lack imagination and ambition.

We'll likely see trillionaires within the next decade or 2 - while they'll miss immortality theres every chances their grandchildren will get it.

There are suggestions the 'Communist' China leadership (who are all billionaires) have set a priority for medical research in China to be longevity and rejuvination research.

The likes of you and me will not be getting immortality - only the mega rich.

I don't think people are quite getting that with the advancements made in technology and biology over time we will be greatly upgraded with basically superpowers. Genetic engineering.

Anti aging might work well with the brain. Master brain transplants and we'll be able to harvest fresh 18YO bodies to retrofit :) the brains into. Against various rights but that'll all be changed if it becomes possible the super wealthy have a way to live extended lives. Also probably easier than immortality in the same body due to the wear and tear. Oxygen is key to human life but is also an aging factor on the body too. Being 150 years old and arthritis in most joints, including spine, would be no fun at all either.
Personally I'd prefer to see research on creating 'better' humans. As the world moves towards automation, displacing humans from jobs, developing a super human that provides more value would be better than trying to help old clowns live longer :). What could the human race achieve if everyone born had a very high IQ.

If the technology prevents you aging but not dying at all, can't you just kill yourself when you're fed up? Off to Switzerland?

I used to think of that watching Highlander in the early/mid 90s and thinking... Imagine if you could live forever. Seeing the same faces for a period of time then they all phase out as their time has come. Seeing a new generation over and over every 80 years.
It must be mentally soul destroying seeing a generation die out every 80 - 90 years from people you once knew and grew attached to.
Well, being the only person I know of who was both born in Glenfinnan and who has a measure of skill with a sword... I'll let you know in about 600 years!! :p

I think people do get that but you would get bored eventually and need a hell of a lot of resources to support yourself.

This is all a pipe dream. Things will go to rat**** in 20-30 years when the population of the world reaches 9-10 billion, which is the maximum it's estimated the Earth can sustain.

Then we're going to see a lot of deaths and a rapid decline in birthrates.

We are on the cusp of a major population decline and it will cause massive problems.

I think living in the West in the early 21st century is pretty much the pinnacle of human existence for the foreseeable future. We have lucked out with how good we have it, in 50 years the world will be a very 'interesting' place.
