I watched this other day and thought some of you here would also enjoy it, it shows the development of the XBOX, the history and showing what was going on inside Microsoft at the time and shows them to be pretty humble when they messed up certain aspects of the XBOX.


Enjoy it is a 6 part documentary. Very intresting for technology enthusiasts, I have never owned a XBOX but have played on them and was of course intrested in the technology and the future of consoles and computers.

I think it was great that they got Don Mattrick back. Kudos to him because he could have easily said no but then I guess no-one really has heard his side of the story before. He was just vilified by everyone.

My pleasure, happy you're all enjoying it. I thought it was really good and not even an XBOX gamer but love tech and of course it's all computer related technology and watching the people that make these devices and to see inside Microsofts mind at the time.
 
Just finished watching this. It's a really great documentary. I don't think many other companies would make something or be involved with making something like this. Showing the good and bad of the company over the years. It could very much have been just a celebration of Xbox and glossed over everything else. Focussing on the red ring issues, the Xbox one failure made for a really interesting watch. Also the amount of big industry names they got is amazing. Especially having Don Mattrick, who is pretty much the fall guy for the Xbox one back to discuss it. Thanks for the recommendation, this would have completely passed me by.
 
I’m loving the series so far it makes me feel like I’m in the 2000s. It's a great documentary, I love that Microsoft was willing to poke fun at their missteps. Really refreshing to see their honesty in an industry that’s usually so secretive.
 
Watched this recently. Really enjoyed it. Fair play to MS for being honest about their mistakes along the way. Would be cool to see a similar documentary from Sony.

It would be a paradigm shift for a Japanese company to be open about their failings like Microsoft are in this series.

Indeed. Hell will freeze over before you get Ken K on film saying his PS3 master plan was a total catastrophe.
 
Still only on the 3rd episode but as someone who never got the original Xbox I completely under estimated how quickly they went from concept to launch. Same with software, always thought Halo was gash, but I will be a little less harsh with the time scales they worked.

Nice documentary thanks for the heads up.
 
Just watched the first four episodes, really good and shows what an achievement it was to get the console out in the incredibly short timescale they worked to.
 
Thanks that was a fantastic documentary , file alongside the movie about Atari "Game Over" both exceptional pieces about the history of consoles and gaming. Wonder if they were made by the same people as are so similar in style.

 
Watched this back a few months ago, I also bought the book they brought out shortly after the release of the original Xbox called opening the Xbox.

I find the whole thing fantastic, I was an original Xbox owner got it shortly after release with my first apprentice pay packet. It genuinely was an amazing bit of kit, and the games for it were in abundance and generally incredible, they were so innovative and the graphics were amazing compared to what came before.

It wasn't around for long either as the 360 was brought out within a couple of years, I got this aswell and again it pushed things further, games continued to be abundant and innovative, almost everyone loved it, even with the rrod.

Then they brought out the Xbox one, and as the videos state they lost there way and forgot about the games, they could have kept their fancy gimmicks but should have concentrated on the games, this turned so many people away from Xbox, myself included, this is when Xbox lost it's customer base, they suddenly went corporate instead of being designed and built by gamers for gamers, I didn't have any console during this period, just kept the 360. The one X was imo pretty pointless, probably cost more to develop than it earned and itself was short lived due to the series x release.

I like the Xbox ecosystem, so when my boy came of age we got him the series x, it's an incredible bit of kit, that sadly hasn't had the success it deserves, it's not worse than the playstation, personally I prefer the controller if the Xbox and the software on the Xbox, but all you hear people talking about these days is playstation, that's all they talk about in the playground.

As an Xbox fan boy for so many years it's so disappointing to see Xbox in it's current state, i cannot for the life of me understand how Phil Spencer is still the head of Xbox, I'm his reign at the top the Xbox has gone from bad to worse, and the recent bombardment in the news of Xboxes new dawn of going multi platform and that Xbox shouldn't have exclusive games is turning away further potential Xbox buyers as the language from the top sounds as though they're not really interested in supporting Xbox.

It genuinely does make me so very angry with Microsoft and I cannot see them rectifying it.

Gone are the days where console manufacturers designed their own chips and programming language giving the potential to make an unbelievably big error which inevitably forces hierarchy to change (how Xbox came no.1 for a short period of time) now everything is farmed out with essentially the same specs.

Blood firmly boiled by Xbox.
