Hey,

it's been over 20 years since I built a PC and a lot has changed. I have been watching youtube videos daily for 2-3 months and I have settled on a build but I need it kindly reviewed.

Current PC spec

Monitor- Samsung LC34J791WTUXEN
CPU - Intel i5-8500 3ghz
Mobo - ASRock Z370 Pro 4
GPU - EVGA GTX GeForce 1070 FTW
PSU - CoolerMaster 550W
Case - Aerocool 1000
RAM - G.Skill 32GB 2133MHz
AIO - Corsair Hydro Series H55 High Performance All-in-One Liquid CPU Cooler, 120 mm Radiator

My current PC I got at the start of the pandemic second hand for £500. Since then I got the 2K monitor and all the games I play are on the 3440x1440p resolution.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,203.48 (includes shipping: £14.70)

Questions

  1. PSU, is 850 watts enough? The PSU needs to be able to support at 3600Ti in the future. I’d prefer a white version but it's an extra £30-40 for the paint job…

  2. The Corsair memory has RGB on it, will the icue software detect it automatically when fitted into the mobo?

  3. Can I confirm I don't need to mess around with the BIOS on the mobo with the selected CPU?

  4. I plan to use my existing GPU until I can get a new one at a sensible price. Can I confirm my 1070 will work fine on the new mobo?

  5. Originally I had planned to buy all Corsair QL120 fans but they are too expensive, so I’ve changed it to Cooler Master MF120 fans. With 3 intake at the bottom, 3 intake on the side, 1 rear exhaust, 3 exhaust via the rad top mounted, am I creating negative pressure or is this setup ok?

  6. The AIO, I wanted the MASTERLIQUID ML240 ILLUSION WHITE EDITION however it doesn't come in a 360mm version. There is a MASTERLIQUID ML360L ARGB WHITE EDITION V2 but I can’t find it on the OC website, therefore I have defaulted to the Corsair H150i AIO.
7. With 7 Coolermaster fans and 3 Corsair plans I am confused about cabling. I am assuming this device “https://www.coolermaster.com/catalog/coolers/rgb-accessories/argb-led-controller/” comes with the CM 3 fan pack so I will get 2 of these. Can the Corsair fans work fine off this controller? 2 x controller = 8 ARGB ports and I have 10 fans, do I need some splitter cables? I think I need “hub” to provide PWM power is this correct? What do I need exactly?

8. What sort of value can I expect if I sold my existing GPU?

£250 on case and fans seems excessive and your probablly better of going intel.

Here's am alternative build, put aio cooler in the front and move the rgb fans to top/rear. Hone 860w psu in cade you get a 3080.

CODE My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,027.01 (includes shipping: £13.20)

the new RM850 is on offer for £99 away...should come with white sleeved cables as well..the rm850 above is older version..new version has better more durable fans
if going 5600X, you can pick those up for £200 to £210...I would not pay £320 for one...I bought my 5800X for £310... but I agree with Mickey, I'd go intel in this case..the mobo he's put in can take 3 gen4 nvme as opposed to 1 x gen4, 1 x gen3 in the b550 board, and the gpu slot is gen5 also
If build is going to last I'd consider getting 32gb ram...as people transition to DDR5 etc in future and production ddr4 scales down, prices might creep up...not strictly necessary now, but as more people buy bigger ram, pc programs etc generally get optimised to use it more...seen 32 gb corsair 3600C18 for £141...same place the white 2021 version of rm850 is on offer
Personally, I love the look of the Evo case...it something you look at all the time so aesthetics important to me, so if that's what you like, go for it...it's a very good case and gives lots of options
the 360mm aio can be had for £145 at the mo on offer away(£130 for black variant)...you can get the lcd screen at a later date as an add on with this aio if you ever feel like treating yourself in the future..£80, so expensive, but gives you the option
the ocuk price for the crucial P5P is good atm, so wouldn't hang around before it goes back up again
good luck wiring all those fans up:cry:..from viewing some builds I've seen, software can be a bit troublesome, and you might need to get some fan controllers. I bought Ql120, but still needed a commander pro even with the core controllers that came with the fans

In all honesty if you are waiting for an RTX 3060 Ti, then secure that first, or even better if you are hoping for an FE model get the 3070 if playing at 3440x1440p.

I wouldn't change your system until you have the new card, as it could take you 3 weeks or 6 months, unless you are going to spend £750 on a £370 card.

You could always drop in an 8700K, but you want to be spending no more than £120 really, you see a few on the MM if you have access. :)

1. PSU for 5600X + GTX1070/RTX3060Ti I would be perfectly fine even with your current 550W. 850W is definitely safe/overkill
2. no experience with RGB, but yes, software should pick it up on the memory automatically
3. Yeah, no need to mess with BIOS. But still recommend to update to latest BIOS at some point. At the minimum, set the XMP profile for memory
4. Yes, 1070 will work fine
5. Sounds like you will have positive pressure. Also sounds like a complete overkill. I would drop the side intakes.

just seen this white evo upside down build...bit of fun to show what you can do

also just looked at build without reading everything, sorry

you want to put a 3060ti in there...you can get the white 2021 version of the rm750 for £89 away which is more than enough for the 3060ti

the ql120's are expensive, but if you decide, the triple pack in white on offer at £79 at mo, which is pretty much cheapest I've seen in awhile rather than £100 OCUK are asking(and they come with a lighting node core in the box)..I use 9 in my case rather than 10...6 intakes provides enough positive pressure so that if I put my hand at the back of the case, I can feel the air being pushed out, so no need for the extra, and everything remains nice and cool. Sticking with one brand of rgb fans means will work better together..when you download the icue software, it will pick everything up, and you'll be able to control the fans/ram/aio etc all together no problem... as before, with 9 fans, I bough a commander pro for £44 i think...3 fans rgb cables on the aio went into one lighting node core, 6 rgb cables from other fans into other lighting node core. 3 aio fan power cables went into a pwm splitter on aio, other 6 fans pwm cables into the commander pro. The commander pro has 2 usb power headers also, so was needed as only 2 on the mobo, and so the lighting node cores went into that(if I remember correctly)..without it I didn't have enough....
anyway, watch vid above as shows him using commander pro also...you'll need some sort of controller no matter what fans you have

Bang for the buck right now is the i5-12400 + DDR4 B660 combo. I agree with @Journey though that you should not buy before getting the GPU. Unless you're having problems.
Why... I bought my stuff over 3 months... Bought a msi b550 gaming carbon for £149, then swapped it for the rog strix gaming e for £136...if i had waited for the gpu i would have been paying £180 and £220 respectively... Currently ocuk is £200 and £240 for those boards.. Bought pack of 3 ql120's for £78, then had to wait 3 months for them to go on offer again to buy the others after decided to do the lot in ql's... could have bought the 5000x case for £99, but waited to see it go back to £184, and was lucky to bag it for £120...2 months after i got my gpu.... If you know what you want and its on offer, just get it. From my experience when gpu's became a bit more available in july when the 6600xt was released for under£400 and you could get a 3070ti for £550/£610, price of other components went up
Only dont buy if you unsure what you want and are deciding between different cpu's/platforms. Guess z690 being new, that maybe worth waiting for as prices may drop a bit with b660 coming on mkt, but cant see any other reason... Look at 5600x cpu, 4 months ago ocuk were selking them for £259/269, now £319

Why... I bought my stuff over 3 months...

That was your choice, and in 3 months from now the OP might secure a new GPU, and the likely hood is CPU prices will have dropped, and new parts will be on the market (5800X3D) and board prices for things like B660 will have stabilised, also you don't gauge prices just based on one shop. Fair enough if you set our heart in a specific case, and you see it on a good offer, that isn't going to change, but the actual main guts of the system should be bought as close together as possible.

How much benefit is the OP going to get at 3440x1440p without a new GPU, remembering he already has a not insignificant 6c/6t CPU with 32GB of RAM?

It's nice to build a shiny new system, but it is a fools errand if you are doing it for X performance gain and actually ending up with nothing that noticeable due to a major component holding you back.

Thanks for your replies.

I agree, it makes more sense to go for a Intel 12th gen CPU right now due to the new architecture which will still gain improvements on performance over time.

Rather than Asus Prime Z690-P WIFI D4 - Intel Z690 DDR4 I am going to go for the ROG STRIX Z690-A GAMING WIFI D4. I don't want a DDR5 mobo as I'm never going to spend money just to jump from DDR4 to DDR5 the only productivity work I do on my PC is sometimes run 5-10 VM's in addition to gaming. I will go for the 2021 white 850W PSU.

To aid with the ARGB cabling I'm also going to get-

Cooler Master ARGB 1-to-3 Splitter
Cooler Master ARGB LED Controller with 4 x 3-Pin Ports
WM Fan Splitter Cable

Yes, 3080 makes more sense, I'm in no rush to get one and will try to source a FE.

Now that's notable part of budget for brand excess and Ridiculously Grossly Bloated.

For non Wifi B550 board £150 would be expensive price.
Expensive board won't make CPU any faster or longer good staying, but only you that much poorer and having lower capability/performance PC because of wasted budget.

And if cooler costs half the CPU that's more whacked up as Trump.
Even £50 heatpipe coolers would be overkill for low heating power of 5600X.
For water pipes cooler Arctic Freezer II is the choise with far beefier than most others radiators and without blowing money for no good.

In SDDs priority should be in getting guaranteedly enough storage space.
PCIe v4 is something to get when you have more money/budget than you know what to do with.

£60 is max price for generic performance 3200Mhz 16GB memory when you can get 32GB 3600MHz kit for £100.
